HELLO
OK, we're gonna get moving along. So welcome everyone. My name is Catherine Coleman. I work in the Office of Admission at the University of Illinois at Springfield. I'm part of the admissions team here. Before we get into the presentation today, we have a couple housekeeping items to go over so that you're aware this webinar will be recorded and is going to be made available for viewing later. So you don't need to worry about taking notes during it within your.
Screen Share You'll see that there's a closed captioning option. It's the button up on the upper right hand corner of your screen with the little CC in a box. Right next to it is the option to toggle off the chat if you don't want to see the chat as well as the button with the four expanding arrows, you can make your screen your view full screen in case you don't want your web browser up there if you should need to resync your audio or visual video at any point.
If it gets out of sync or you have a problem with your Internet, you can just refresh your browser and that should clear anything up. Questions. We would love to get your questions in the chat. Feel free to post those throughout. We're going to look at questions at the end of the session, so we will put a pause on those until a later point and then we'll go through them with our presenters today. I know there are a lot of people on today. That's great.
Hope that you're happy to be here. We're happy to see you virtually. With that, I'm going to introduce Tammy Schlotzky and Dr. Serkin curates from our finance program at the University of Illinois, Springfield. Thank you for joining us today.
Hi everyone. Um welcome to our session on the Master of Science in Finance program AN.
Tammy, we can't hear you on the audio.
Adam Shaw
09:32:56 AM
I can hear her
I see that your microphone is picking it up.
Ohh, alright, Adam Shaw says. He can hear you. So then we're good to go. It's just on my end, so go for it.
All right. Next slide please.
I'm like, uh, I was introduced before. I'm Tammy Schlotzsky and um.
I'm from the finance department and we also have Doctor Kardash here and he's also in the same department.
So an overview, in our Master of Science and Finance program we will we will need 30 credits and our semester is pretty fast it is going to be.
Composed of eight Greek courses so it's accelerated and then the program could be fully online and asynchronous. So if you are working full time then this would be great for you because you can you can work on the program any time.
And of course it's it's them certified. So that's really, really nice. And then.
It's very affordable and there's around 5% of business schools that are ACS certified, I mean a CSB accredited.
Um, I'll let Doctor Kardash.
Introduce the program to you in more detail.
OK, Hello everyone. Welcome again for joining this session and thank you Doctor Schlotzky for introducing me and for for for for your earlier introduction of the program.

Hello Good morning, i am joining from Ghana
OK, so I would like to start with our admissions policy. Our admissions policies, very straightforward. You will need to give us your official transcripts. We do not require GMAT or GRE and we have a set of prerequisite courses.
And we understand that some people had the opportunity to take these classes before and some did not. So if you don't have these prerequisite classes, we have one course that combines elements from all those prerequisite courses. So you can take that course and then after you successfully complete that course, you will be admitted into your your program.
Some schools require you to have an essay and have a Jerry and GMAT make it really challenging for you to get inside the program, but we don't have, we don't have those restrictions.
Here is our curriculum and we have 10 courses here.
The required courses in the core and the next two are additional 2 courses. So basically everybody must take the first aid class, the next two.
Come from a menu of elective courses and right now we're listed here two of them. But by the time you enroll in the program, you may see different electives, but just to.
Just to clarify this further, so everybody needs to take the first aid courses and then the second two are the next two will depend on the particular period that you are you are in the program. So some of these courses are very standard like managerial finance investments, some of them are innovative like applied behavioral finance, introduction to financial psychology.
These are great courses for those of you who are interested in trading SO.
With that, we can actually.
Talk more about trading. So we have a student managed investment fund. What happens here is that we embedded this fund into multiple courses in our MSN Finance program. So when you enroll in those courses, you'll be making stock pitches for the student managed investment fund. Basically, through your pitches you will be managing this portfolio and you have the fancy title of analysts. So with that, you can put it on LinkedIn, you can put it on your resume.
That you are an analyst for the US Student Managed Investment Fund.
Thanks to this fund, you will be able to gain real world experience in picking stocks, riding equity, research report, making pitches, take and looking at the overall portfolio.
As I mentioned before, you will be able to write this on your resume and that will that will enhance your resume. You can write it in your cover letter and that will that will open doors for you.
Now when you bring it all together, so our program will prepare you for a wide range of careers in finance and anything from financial analysts to working in an actuarial insurance type of firm.
Basically the degree is strong, but there are various ways for you to market your skills and target particular.
Particular programs. For example, if you wanna job in investment banking, you can really highlight your participation in the student managed investment fund. If you want a job in a stock brokerage firm, you can really highlight all your trading experience and how it benefited you.
It really it will depend on your on your vision, on what you want to do with this degree.
Now you'll be taking a lot of courses, so basically.
I listed their ten courses or nine of them are finance courses. So the program will give you a very nice foundation and experiential learning opportunities in finance with these learning.
You will find it easier to prepare for the CFA exams or the CFP exams.
I myself the CFA charter holder, I received my charter last year. So I always think about the CF curriculum when we when we design and redesign our courses, our curriculum. So we have a lot of elements from the CFA curriculum and the CFPB curriculum that will help you prepare for those exams. But once again, how well you prepare will depend.
And you what you do with the courses, how much, how much time you spend with an individual course, with the overall program, how well you interact with us and you know get advice. So all that will be a factor in your overall success. So with that, I would like to thank you for joining us today and if you have any questions you can write them in the chat.
And we'll be happy to answer them.
OK. Thank you so much. Are there questions? Please feel free to put those in the chat and we'll be happy to answer them.
Right before that, can you go back one slide and then explain to the students what the CFP and CFA stands for?
CFA is the it's called refers to Chartered Financial Analyst. So.
Kathryn Kleeman
09:41:37 AM
Any Questions?
That is supervised and overseen by the CFA Institute.
And for those of you who are interested in this charter, you will need to take 3 exams and then have work experience and then you will be able to get your charter. And CFP exam is also similar in that you have to take exams and then you have to have certain experience to get your financial your charter. But that one means a certified financial planner. It's more appropriate for wealth management.
But there are people with CFA charter and and they do wealth management as well. So it really depends on what you want to do. They are both highly respected but they differ in terms of their focus. So if you want to go work for a pension fund for an investment bank or or similar similar positions, the CFA charter will be more appropriate. But if you want to be a if you want to work in wealth management, CFP will be.

I would like to ask some questions as regards M.sc Accounting program
A better choice for you, but once again with the CFHR there you can do both jobs.
It looks like the only question we've gotten so far is the about the masters and accountancy, which I don't know if you can address any of that, but I was looking to see when they're umm.
If they have a webinar this week.
We do not work with the that program, so, um, we won't be able to give you a.
A good advice on that one.
Let's see. I don't see that they're having a webinar.
See if I can give you a good e-mail.

I'm currently the controller at a broker dealer. Primarily interested in furthering my career in accounting, but certainly interested in potential career shifts into a finance role.
Type what they want, Catherine, is that.
See ohh here we go. Here's someone maybe.
So Adam could we may call Miss Adam to come to finance?
All right. Any last questions?
Adam Shaw
09:46:32 AM
Are there any in-person options for class?
Ohh any in person options for class.
Uh, we saw this is completely online, but we also have an MBA in applied finance.
Basically that's a general MBA, so that's an MBA program with a certificate in finance. So just to simplify.
We call it MBA in applied Finance, but it's right now if you do that, it will show up as an MBA on your transcript, not an MBA in applied finance, but you will be taking finance courses. You'll be taking, if I recall correctly, for finance courses. So that program is available both on ground and online. But if you want further further specialization, then we have this MSN Finance, but that is only online so.
That's what we have at this point. So in terms of on ground, we have MBA. In terms of online, we have MSN, MSN Finance, But the MBA in in applied Finance is pretty good. As I said, you, you take 4 finance courses.
And all those finance courses are also in the Ms. in finance.
So you roughly get half the exposure, which is which is pretty good and you get your own ground experience if if that's what you choose to have.
Our masters in accounting is also on ground.
