Donna Greer
07:00:44 PM
Hi everyone--I am here.
Daniel Ihenacho
07:01:15 PM
Oh, Donna is here
Donna Greer
07:02:07 PM
I cannot hear anything...just a moment.
Can you guys hear me now?
Awesome. Did you hear my intro? I wasn't sure if it was working.
I couldn't. I couldn't hear anything.
OK, well, just my intro is we're recording this webinar, so if you don't worry about taking a bunch of notes, it'll actually be available for you later. If you do have any questions during the session, please drop them in chat. We will respond to them at the end of the presentation. We won't be answering them in chat though today, so I'm going to go ahead and hand it over to the Ms program and I'll just be here helping out if you need anything.
Welcome everyone to the Graduate Week webinar for MIS.
I don't see Doctor Lee in here, do do you, Daniel?
All right. Well, we'll see if my voice will last through through this whole thing. He may be having trouble too. So this is a different system that we're we're using this time, so it's kind of.
We're trying to get used to it.
Is there is there an option to? Is there nothing to share the screen?
Sarah Adams
07:04:57 PM
The screen is being shared, you can move forward your slides
Sarah Adams
07:05:08 PM
Donna we can't hear you
Hi everyone, my name is Daniel, I'm the GA one of the G is for the Mi is department and.
I'm from Nigeria and this is my second semester US and it's been pretty good so far.
It's been pretty good so far and.
Here with me from the Mrs Department, I have a.
Donna, she's our advisor and.
She assists us with the online coordination and all that and Doctor Lee, I think he'll be joining us later because I don't know why he's not here yet, so I'll just move forward with the slides and.
What is Ms? Ms provides some sort of technical and management. M is is more like a an it?
An IT and a business and management and IT inclined. It's not like the pure.
Business degrees that people get the undergraduate and the NBA's and all that M is is more like it's a fusion of both. It's a fusion of both. So with your other capabilities, your order management capabilities and capabilities and knowledge and then with the.
It The info Information systems background.
And the good thing about Mrs is you don't need to.
You don't need to have a.
I'll prio a prior knowledge about anything.
Or about the about the course itself, about the the, the Mrs Course itself, you know so.
Another thing to note is.
We have different areas different.
Different programs and the MRI department, we have different programs, we have the core MIS, we have the cybersecurity, we have the healthcare informatics and through the course of this meeting, I'm going to be sharing a few important inhibits about it.
Umm, I don't know what's wrong with that.
Moses Basing
07:08:26 PM
Hi Daniel i can herar you
I'm here. Can you hear me?
I can hear you, Sarah, but I don't know if anyone else can hear me.
I can hear you just fine.
Debo Tijani
07:08:41 PM
i can hear you Daniel
I'm trying to move forward to the next slide. It's not letting me.
You gotta make sure that you choose the arrows up in that top to control the slides.
Because, Donna, if you're doing it, it'll mess his up.
Do you see up in the top hand corner where there's the camera, the microphone, the camera, the line through it and the two arrows going this way? You have to click that to control the slides.
It's not letting me. I'm trying to. It keeps bringing it up but I can't seem to get the next slide.
Here, let me see if I can move it forward.
Because if we're all trying to do it, it'll freeze up.
You see the slight change?
Yes, yes, yes. Thank you.
So the MIS the M is department is accredited.
It's accredited under the AACSB.
And it's ranked 53rd out of 184.
You know on the Ms Online Masters program, and it's a top stem designated programs program actually. You know, and.
Donna Greer
07:11:00 PM
Sarah, I lost Daniel and I don't know if anyone can hear me.
Mrs Creates a lot of excellent employment, you know, positions and opportunities for various students and alumni. We, I think just like last semester, before the end of last semester, we had the Hall of Fame, Mrs Hall of Fame, and we honored one of our own, Douglas Douglas Shore. He's.
I think he's a professor.
Somewhere in one of the universities. I can't remember where exactly.
Mrs Creates a lot of opportunities, a lot of positions. You can pick any business analysts, data scientists, information systems, security professionals. You know, with the new cybersecurity, I'm sure that Mrs Department can.
Really bring you up to speed on cybersecurity skills and various hardwares technologies and knowledge in the market today, that is.
You know, on high demand by various agencies and companies like.
Boeing Caterpillar, Honeywell, ensen young.
We have all the Ms students also in various universities across the country. University of Manchester, Upenn. We have University of Sheffield, we have Washington University, we have Claremont Graduate School and all that. We have our alumni students across board, all over the countries, and outside the country as well.
OK, so ohh I'm glad is my name on this slide. Anyway, as I said before, I'm the MIS coordinator and advisor for the students. I'm sorry for the technical difficulties tonight, but I'm the first person that would you would contact if you have a question. Daniel's been in my office several times about different questions about classes and.
Things like that. And if I don't have the answer, then I refer you to the correct person and the correct department that can answer your questions or your concerns.
Yes, and just to add to this.
Cortana is quite helpful. She's, she's our advisor, she's advised very, very well. She's advised me on all all four courses I've taken throughout my, you know, my period here at the university and all have gone smoothly. So she knows the advices and typically, you know, one of Donna's job is to advise you on what course to take and when to take those courses and how best to take those courses and then where you need to, you know.
With your own inputs and make your own decisions. She helps you make those decisions by giving you all the possible options and then you have to choose them. So it's good to speak to Donna. I know I've done so it's good to speak to Donna. And probably when you come in, you can, you know, speak to Donna. I think she was going to be here. Very helpful because she's been very helpful to myself and the other GA and other MI students on campus as well.
Alright, so now we're going to take a little bit of time and talk about the different graduate programs that are available through the MIS department. Of course, the first one is the masters in MIS. This program is offered online and on campus. It's a total of 30 hours or 10 courses.
And the courses are offered in an accelerated, accelerated way. They are 8 weeks long or first half or second-half of the semester. It's designed to be completed in one year. Now this depends a lot on your prerequisite that you may have to finish two and but the the closure of the program.
There's an exam which is zero credit hours and it's no cost to the student.
All right. The the next one and this started full blown in fall and this is the Masters in cyber security management and it's really kind of repetitive, but this this masters is.
Has gotten a lot of notice. There are a lot of people that are interested in that because it's such a hot area right now. Cyber security is so.
Debo Tijani
07:16:10 PM
Hi, I cant hear anyone else except Daniel
So again, the programs are offered on campus and online. They're 30 credit hours or 10 courses. And the courses are offered in an accelerated program with having the courses first half, second-half of the semester and it's designed for completion in one year.
The topics that are covered in the the courses. This is not the whole list, but it gives you an idea of what's included in there. There's information security, cyber security, management, compliance and legal issues, digital for forensics policy, business continuity planning.
And the third one started last spring, and this is the the Masters in Healthcare informatics. It is only offered online. It's not offered on campus. It's 30 credit hours just like the other two. And it's also designed to be completed in one year. And this one includes an exit exam like the MIS program with zero credit hours, no cost and the different topics.
Are, you know, even though we think of hospitals as a big ginormous.
Entity they do have everything is tied to IT anymore. So there are in especially in the bigger hospitals. There are a lot of IT positions that are available in those hospitals. I just had one of my bachelors students finished the the Bachelors in MIS and he took an internship at OSF in Peoria.
And he is now working for them so.
There are positions available in those healthcare entities and so some of the topics in the program are healthcare Operations, Informatics, database concepts, systems analysis and design, project management, data mining and data communications. And what you'll see if you compare this program, the the courses in this program through the MIS program, you will see that they're kind of similar in their titles.
But the healthcare informatics courses take you on a journey on how each of those plug into the healthcare realm. So.
We're pretty excited to be able to to offer this program and it's off to a good start.
We also have graduate certificates. To be able to complete a graduate certificate at UIS and for MIS. These are MIS graduate certificates. You need to have a completed bachelors degree and.
We had three basic certificates for many years, business process management, business analytics and IT project management. But we have added to some cybersecurity certificates and available in spring 2023, there will be a healthcare analytics certificate. So if if you if you decide, oh, I don't know if I want MIS, maybe I want computer science.
But you still can add that certificate and complete it. So, um, and we have data analytics students that finish one of our our certificates too. So it's not just MIT or non degree students actually taking these certificates. They can be someone else in a different graduate program that adds that certificate.
So Daniel's already done his spiel on UM.
On being a GPA in the MIS department, Daniel.
Can you just give the students an an idea of what kind of project you have worked on? I know you're busy working on some some projects for someone, So what what would you, what kind of example would you give us?
OK. So being a GA, you have to be in a GA for the department cuts across a lot of a lot of activities. So you have the administrative support, we have the Technical Support, you have the the research support. So basically what I've been doing since I became a GA and got admitted into the MIS department is research, so.
And you are under as a GA you are under direct supervision of basically everybody, everybody in the all the faculty offices. Donna is a supervisor, but then we all know that the head of the department is the main supervisor, Doctor Lee.
So I've worked with Doctor Lee on a couple of papers, research papers like blockchain machine learning.
Health, healthcare, informatics and all those you know kind of things. So basically what I do is I search for resources and materials on this, this, this topics, bring them together, compile them, read them, study them, then point out and get our key informations from all these various resources and topics and areas across the whole MIS, blockchain and informatics. So basically.
Most of my research from last semester to this semester has been almost about to blockchain.
So tell us how doing that research as a GA ties well into what you'll be doing in your in your newly found IT position after you graduate. How will it help?
So blockchain blockchain has to do with.
Data. First of all I want to say that.
Doing this research more like gives you an understanding about data and.
The whole blockchain and how in-depth it is, how it connects various industries like the finance, the healthcare and all that blockchain is more like.
It's it's a it's a system. It's a it's a series of ledgers in chains connected together that you know like packets of data put together that you used to you know create barriers, store information. It's more like to go tech. I don't want to go technically into it but it's a it's information systems is information systems has to do with typically almost everything business processes and.
A whole whole lot of a whole lot of things that I could do with a a blockchain and with blockchain I could become a a Deezer expert, a data analyst. With blockchain I can do.
Data mining. With blockchain I could do security, data security. With blockchain, you know I can structure data for healthcare, for the finance industries, and typically almost a lot of industries got across.
I think, I think I want to back up and not be so specific on blockchain, but just being able to know how to research things. You do that when you're in an IT position. You have to research things to be able to problem solve and and create a better system.
For for the company that you're working for, right, Daniel?
That's where we have blockchain and business process management and IT governance. So.
A lot of sorry, a lot of times the.
Positions could be like an analyst position. Quite frankly. It it doesn't really, you know, if it says data analysts are, it says database analysts or business analysts, a lot of times they're looking for that person that has both the business side and the IT side of things and that's what this MIS degree does. It gives you a a good look at how I.
Tea and business fit together.
And work together anymore especially. It's just there's no business without IT anymore. So except maybe a mom and pop shop somewhere.
So we just only have a few minutes left because of the technical difficulties, but I think Sarah isn't it that they can put their questions into the chat, right?
Yeah, it's really, it's really echoing, I I don't know. So do any of you have any questions for us?
Moses said he can't hear me.
Moses Basing
07:25:58 PM
I am a prospective graduate student from Ghana, I would like to know if I need to evaluate my credential to apply for the MIS Program
It looks like that was from earlier from 608.
I can answer that question Moses. Yes, your credentials will need to be evaluated. It's the same for every program. They do have to get in Macy's member evaluation.
That is a common question. We hear it a lot, so.
Yeah. And Moses, I would just like to add, I don't know about, I don't know about, I don't know about Ghana. Yeah, I do know about Ghana because I had my undergraduate from Ghana from the University of Legon and I think you said you're from Ghana, so typically.
Moses Basing
07:27:05 PM
I got my bachelors from the University of Ghana
We have various various Nazis Members that actually do the valuation for certain countries. So I think your best bet should be education perspective for your transcript evaluation. So I think you should look at education perspectives. They are a member of Nazis and they can do it for you sharp and easy. So.
Yes, yes, yes, they can do it for you.
Education perspective. I recommend education perspective or any other one because I use the education perspective and because the basic one we know. The very first one. I can't remember what the name is, but you could check. A lot of them, you know, have countries where they they evaluate and countries where they can't really evaluate. But I think education perspective actually does Ghana as well.
And you can find the full list of Macy's members on the International Admissions website. I would copy and paste it here, but it looks like they're doing some construction on the US website right now, so.
Unfortunately I can't copy and paste that.
Moses Basing
07:28:02 PM
Thanks a lot
Debo Tijani
07:28:06 PM
I am from Nigeria, I have been admitted into MIS as a graduate student, I want to ask if GRE has been waived because its still indicating in my portal
And and Moses, I think you can reach us by e-mail. If you have more questions, I think you can reach us by e-mail about this topic and any other issue that you might have.
Moses Basing
07:28:07 PM
Is the MIS Program a 1 year program? or 2 years?
Donna Greer

Word of wisdom. Leave as much time as possible as you can to don't procrastinate on getting your documentation together and getting it submitted. Don't think it's going to go smoothly. Leave as much time as possible as you can because there can be something could go wrong and it may not be as smooth as you think and then you'll be not be able to start when you want to so.
Use as much time as you possibly can to get everything together and get it submitted.
And we have a question from Debo.
Ah, yes, the GRE GMAT scores.
Are not. You do not have to have them, they are waived.
So I'll put that in here too.
Donna Greer
07:29:33 PM
GRE/GMAT scores are not needed.
So basically what you need to do is just have your, if you can get your your degree evaluated by any of the nurses members and gotten across got got into the school. I think that's a that's a good start too. So basically, yeah.
Portal, for those of you that are still in here, that needs to be updated in there and that GRG mat on the checklist needs to be taken off.
So you're still going to see it, I think for a little while until they get that updated?
Debo Tijani
07:30:29 PM
I have submitted my GA/GPSI form, when will i get a response?
So the IT it depends on whether you're going to go full time or part time. So what I mean by that well.
If you take more classes, it's going to take less time to get those ten classes done. OK? So it really depends on your course load for each semester. And remember that these courses are half of the semester, so you can take more courses within that semester.
As far as the GH Gypsy form is concerned that that department, the GA department does look over them and and will be contacting you about that.
But as far as I'm concerned or or the MIS department, that's not really ours to look over, but it is the the GA department.
Is there any other questions?
Moses Basing
07:31:44 PM
My bachelor's degree is in actuarial science but I have experience in GIS Project Management, Software Quality Assurance and I currently work as a software developer. Do I qualify to apply for MIS?
The question asks is if I have they this person and we do have people like this. I have a bachelor's degree that's not related to MIS or IT. And what was yours in Daniel? What was your back?
Mine. Mine was in management and the computer studies.
OK, so it did kind of relate, right? But what will happen there is when you submit your application and admissions releases releases it to the MIS department, we look at your undergraduate transcripts to see if you have fulfilled the prerequisites for the MIS program through of work in your bachelors.
And whatever you don't have, then you will be responsible for taking those and fulfilling those prerequisites. So if you're an actuarial science, you probably haven't taken a programming class, I would say. So then that would be an outstanding prerequisite. Now you can start the MIS program with outstanding prerequisites. You do not have to finish them first and then start the program. You should.
Take your prerequisites first, because they do help you with the MIS coursework.
And but you can take a mixture of prerequisites at the beginning and MIS courses. That's OK.
And you have to have a undergrad GPA of 2.5.
There any other questions?
So, Moses, to answer your last questions, your last question, I think yes, you do qualify to be admitted to the Mrs Department. So.
Well, I gave him the criteria so well, but yes.
Moses Basing
07:34:19 PM
What are the requirement to be considered for a GA in the MIS department?
And you can go to the catalog on the UI website since we can't copy and paste any links right now, but you you can look at the prerequisite list that's in there.
Well, how to be considered for a G and the MIS department to probably looking for someone, but not necessarily.
That has a higher GPA when they come into the program has an aptitude for.
They don't have to know programming, but have some kind of aptitude for that.
And what else would you say Daniel on that because?
You got chosen. Why did you get chosen? Because of your smile?
So so basically basically Moses and what you watch one other thing, another thing is you have.
You have to have some form of experience. You know, some form of experience. Basically not so much, but a form of experience and.
An experience in research, you know, something like that and.
Walking experience, you know, just.
And maybe you said you have GIS, project management software quality assurance, so I believe you.
You have some form of experience in the in that area, so I think you do. You do qualify and.
Uh, research, research and.
That's infotech awareness, actually.
And a good a good undergraduate GPA.
Moses Basing

Thanks a lot, Daniel, Sarah, and Donna. I will start with the credential evaluation right away and will reach out should I run into problems along the way.
