OK Alright well thank you doctor um so uh my doctor Clinton said I am um basically their recruitment in advising coordinator for the Honors Program. I'm the one that generally um meets with students face to face when they come to campus for a campus visit. And so I'm going to kind of go through my little spiel about the honors program and then we'll open it up to questions. This presentation is kind of designed for.
Potential our perspective students as well as already admitted students so and doctor kling sure. And if you have questions he will be on the chat side of it and so he'll be monitoring that and be answering those. And then if there's you know questions at the end. Of course we can address those but.
And let's get started. OK, so um, for those of you who are from the area were not from the area, just a little bit of background about the University, the University of Illinois used to be stagnant State University and in 1995 we became U of I and part of the UI system. At that point we were a transfer school and so we didn't have any freshman or sophomore's on campus and.
Hum, I calm the powers that be. They decided that they wanted you YS to look like the other two. If I, uh, universities, and we became a four year institution, and the way that they figured the easiest way to kind of transition us into that would be to start with a smaller cohort of students. And so they designed the honors program 1st, and so the capital scholars honors program is the first freshman class that came to campus.
So we have been a four year institutions since 2001. Uhm, and so that's kind of exciting that were, you know, coming up on a big milestone here. Um, the Honors Program. There's a couple differences between the traditional program coming in as a traditional freshman an the Honors Program. One of those differences is that we do have a two year on campus residential requirement.
Even if you live in the Springfield area and can actually see your house from the top of our building, you would still be required to live in the residence Hall for your first two years. And the reason we do that is because we have a living learning community that is kind of the focus and the foundation of our program. An I can explain a little bit more about what goes into that other than just a residential requirement, but for the first year, students live in what we call
The Lincoln residents home and then for the second year, we have a second residence Hall where everyone will move to founders. Every honor student, whether you're in Lincoln or founders, your first or second year, you will be housed.
In a sweet so we have a sweet style where there's two rooms Anna bathroom for every sweet and each room houses to students. So there's four students sharing one bathroom. And because of this living, learning community, all honor students will live with other honor student. Even if you're an athlete. I mean, we have a lot of athletes in our program and they do very well. Athletes honor students. We try to house with other athletes as well. So just because you're.
Any athlete doesn't mean that you won't be apart of this uhm communities, though that's kind of how the The learning or the living situation is.
And so that's like I said, we have a living learning community that's that's built in in place there. So, um.
Let's move on to the next one here. A couple of the perks of the program. Normally, if I would meet with you in person, I kind of going to tons of detail about all of these. But um, for the purposes of this, uh, we're just going to highlight some of the major parts of the program, and why students I get the question all the time. Why students would pick the Honors Program, um, and so so one of those is that every honor student does get a brand new laptop Dell Computer. They get them the second day they arrive on campus.
Uh, we do all the maintenance on him. All the programming, if it breaks, we fixed it. If we can't fix it will get you another one. It sure is over summer over winter break. Um it's it's basically yours until you graduate up there. Very, very nice machines, um. Also every student in the honors program does get an honor scholarship. An if you've already been admitted to the program for the fall, you will have noticed that that has already been assessment assigned to you or awarded to you.
Uh, minutes based on a grid with your AC TS 80 in GPA combined an we have a slide that for those who haven't quite applied yet or wondering how that scholarship kind of came about and there's a slide a little bit later that goes into more detail. Um, another one of the perks for the honors program. As that we have a mentoring and tutoring program that is just through the Honors Program.
And those of you who are coming in in the fall, uhm, we are. We put together a list of mentors. They are hand picked. They go through an inner inner interview process. They are.
An recommended by professors. UM, their high achieving students they you know, are great mentored leaders and you will have the opportunity those who are coming in in the fall. Uhm will. I'll be sending out biographies of all of our mentors annual be able to choose like your top three. I'm choices based on their biographies and then you'll be able to write a biography to your mentor so they can get to know you before.
You get to campus. You also get their contact information and so it will be kind of like your first friend. Um, on campus in the mentoring program, not only just mentors individual students, but they do mentoring events throughout the earth. So, um, we have this great room. It's called in the RH residence Hall were all of our programming happens an our mentors put on events such as choosing your major stress Busters. There's.
You know money management, some studying abroad, all kinds of different things. Even maybe learning styles. Uhm, it's just really to help you with that transition from high school to college and help you be successful that first year. They're very well trained, uh, meant words, uhm. And so that's definitely part of the living learning community. Also, the tutoring tutoring program is an option for you guys.
I know that you are honor students and a lot of times tutoring is not looked upon as like you know something that honor students would need, but not every student is successful at every discipline and so we have this tutoring program, um, that meets a three times a week. Are tutors are also trained and are picked for certain.
Disciplines to tutor in and so we have like group tutoring sessions where you can meet one on one with the tutor. Maybe it's just to look over a paper or you need help with a certain project project. Were math problem or something. So we have that available for our honor students as well. Now we do have a learning hub through the University as well that you could get some additional tutoring, but we do have this in-house tutoring program.
Another perk of the program, what we think it's Burke, is that all of our cap faculty and staff are located in the Lincoln residence Hall, where our students will be living there first year. So if you're if you have any questions or any problems like we said, Doctor Kling stern is right there. I'm right next to the mailboxes in the main lobby of LR. A chance I'm very accessible for quick check your Mail Poppin ask a quick question.
Katelyn H.
06:14:27 PM
Is tutoring considered an on-campus job?
Um were very, very accessible also down the the one wing. Uhm, they have all of our writing faculty down that wing until you'll be taking our writing composition sequence, which I'll explain leader that first year, and so are writing faculty are located there, so if you have any questions or need some help with the prompt, all you have to do is literally walk downstairs, walk down the Hall and you know go into their office and ask for help.
Another thing that we do in the honors program is academic success plan meetings.
Marc Klingshirn
06:15:09 PM
Katelyn--after proper training and gaining of clinical hours, students can indeed be paid for the work, up to a specific amount of $500.
There's two main advisors in the Honors Program, an that's myself and Courtney Um, and so we will do your academic advising for any major those first two years. And so you're kind of ours. The first, to the reason we do, advising for the first two years. Basically only is because you're honest company or your honors course sequence. Then curriculum is taking those first two years are courses.
Katelyn H.
06:15:40 PM
Awesome! Thank you!
Marc Klingshirn
06:15:45 PM
(that is per year), sorry, forgot that. :)
Parker C.
06:16:08 PM
Would I have access to pre med advisers the first 2 years?
That you take through the program meet lower division general education requirements that all students have to meet in order to graduate from the University. And so, um, your junior in senior year is focused mostly on your major and minor requirements, and so our courses meet those Gen Ed requirements. Those Lower Division One and 200 level classes. Those first two years, and so that's why we do cap advising those years.
Marc Klingshirn
06:16:18 PM
YES!
Elise B.
06:16:32 PM
Can CAP Honors courses transfer to U of I Champaign for full credit?
And then our academic success plans Courtney and I we meet with each and every one of our freshmen while they come in their freshman year. First semester and um and we would do um success play meetings for about 1/2 an hour. We talk to you about what worked for you in high school, what you're nervous about for college. We do these between sometimes the second and third week, sometimes the 3rd and 4th week up the first semester, just to make sure like your.
Marc Klingshirn
06:16:41 PM
I'm happy to work with students during the first week!
Eating or sleeping. You have your books. Um, you're getting along with your roommates. Um, there's no like major challenges that you're facing. An if there are some things that we can help set up clean up for you. Maybe it's counseling. Maybe it's setting stuff with the disability services or getting a tutor for a class that you know that you're maybe you're not really strong in math and you're taking a math class your first semester, and you're really nervous about that. So maybe we're going to set you up with the tutor right away, so it's just.
Our way to get to know you and also make sure that were setting you up for success instead of you coming to as mid semester and um, feeling like you're in the weeds. So um, that's kind of our proactive approach to that. And Courtney and I is advisors. We do those academic success plan meetings.
Marc Klingshirn
06:17:34 PM
Our courses transfer to any school that is part of the Illinois Articulation Initiative, which would include UIUC. We hope you'd stay here, though! :)
Parker C.
06:17:36 PM
I'm concerned that the CAP project senior year would compete with study time for MCATs. Thoughts?
Ahmed A.
06:17:54 PM
Will I need high level programming skills to join pre med?
No, I did say that, uh, your honors courses are basically taking your first two years, but you do have a senior, a class that you like a closing seminar class that you take your senior year, but those first two years are really locate are really focused on, um, are honors classes. But you are considered an honor student for four years. Even though we're not doing your advice in your junior and senior year, your hours for four years.
Marc Klingshirn
06:18:07 PM
Take your MCAT the summer prior to your senior year...It won't be an issue.
Parker C.
06:18:17 PM
Thank you!
And one of the perks of the program is that when you graduate, you're not only graduating from EU of I institution, but it is notice on your transcripts and on your diploma that you graduated from an honors program. So it looks really marketable for you, especially if you're wanting to go on to a professional school or getting your first job or going to Graduate School. Even doing internships. Having that noted that you are part of an honors program does definitely make you stand up for service so.
Ahmed A.
06:18:35 PM
Will I need high level programming skills to join pre med?
Hum, so that is definitely, um, some of the perks of being an honor students. Now we're going to move on here.
Marc Klingshirn
06:18:44 PM
Math and science courses are of primary importance for the MCAT and pre-med.
And so the curriculum is different, and so I'm going to the next flight. I'm going to go into will go into detail about what classes you will be taking those first two years, so the honors program has kind of that foundation to our program and one of the foundation in, um, is the living learning community like I had unstated, and the other part is, is that?
Parker C.
06:19:26 PM
Do you have any affiliation with local hospitals for shadowing opportunities?
Is the critical thinking in reading and writing component of our program. Now I get the question all the time when I meet with families and students who were honor students in high school and they're like really concerned about going to four year institution, especially a U of I institution and um.
I'm getting distracted by the questions. Uhm and so on. Are students are really concerned about like getting into an honors program in college and they're like, well, I did all these AP classes. I've done all these high level courses and I just want to be able to go to college without having the pressure of being a part of an honors program. So this slide kind of talks to you a little bit. If you want to just read it over about some of the curriculum strength that our curriculum.
Marc Klingshirn
06:20:09 PM
A number of our students do hours at the local hospitals, Memorial in particular.
Jordan W.
06:20:14 PM
I will have a variety of Dual Credits from my high school classes. I am coming forom out of state (KY) what is the likelyhood that these credits would transfer?
Gives you which is your soft skills, your public speaking, leadership skills. We do a lot of group projects in our course dazed because we want you to become a leader in work. Well in a team environment and have those public speaking skills and Doctor Klingshirn always says when he does a presentation you know that employers always say that what graduates are lacking is public speaking and so we start you out doing those public speaking things.
Marc Klingshirn
06:20:56 PM
We would need to sit down with you to determine how they will count.
Right, you know right out of the gate. Uhm, when you're in our program and then of course the technical skills like critical thinking, um, writing, so our program is really heavy on reading and writing and critical thinking. So when I have students that come to me and say, you know, I don't really know if I want the high pressure of being in an honors program and going to four year institution, I always tell them, You know, that it's not our courses. Meet certain Jeanette requirements and.
Jordan W.
06:21:13 PM
Ok, thank you!
Parker C.
06:21:23 PM
Do the students that spend time at Memorial set up the opportunities themselves or does the university help make that connection?
You will see here in a minute that, UM, for the first two years you will take a couple of honors classes each semester for your first two years. You're not completely taking honors classes for those first two years. There's a combination of classes, and so you're not completely overwhelmed with all honors coursework and so really, our classes. You know, I don't like to say like they're not difficult because they are challenging and they do.
Marc Klingshirn
06:21:46 PM
Many of our students make their own connections, but we can help if needed.
Really, um, stretch your mind and we want you to think out of the box and think critically about things. And, um, there is a lot of reading an A lot of writing. And so when Doctor Kling Shern looks for students to admit to the program, he wants to make sure that you are strong in the areas of reading and writing because we want our students to be successful in our classes. 'cause we know that our courses are, you know, really focused in those.
Marc Klingshirn
06:22:16 PM
Many students are part of Scribe America there.
Areas, and so those are, you know, kind of the foundation skills that are program sets are students you know up with so, um.
Parker C.
06:22:34 PM
Thank you!
Marc Klingshirn
06:22:45 PM
:)
So that's kind of like the background of that. And then I'm going to kind of the next slide. Here is going to kind of breakdown the courses that you'd be taking as an honor student. Now these are the classes that only honor students who are in the honors program can take the Honors Program only admits incoming freshman to the program because we have a lock step curriculum. What you take your first semester, you have to pass and then build on to the next sequence. Of course, is your second semester.
And then the next course says you're you know. Third semester an 4th semester, and so, um, there is. You know, really kind of a science to it and.
Katelyn H.
06:23:24 PM
Is there a way we could access the slideshow after this webinar?
We have advising guides and so I don't know if you all have pens and papers to write this down then I probably should have put the link in here, but, uh, we have advising guides for every single major uhm on campus and, um, our program works with all majors except for nursing, 'cause the nursing program is part of the UI C.
University and so on. But every other major that we offer to undergraduates are program works with.
Marc Klingshirn
06:23:47 PM
Current advising guides are located on the CAP Honors website.
Kathryn Kleeman
06:23:49 PM
Advising Guides: https://www.uis.edu/caphonors/curriculum/advisingguides/
And so we have advising guides and so, if you are familiar, which I hope you have gotten on line and got on our website. But if you go to the homepage of you? Why us and then uh on the right hand side. There's an A-Z and X if you click on the agency index and click on C for Capital Scholars Honors Program. Then you want to click on the left hand side. There is a link for curriculum and then under curriculum. There isn't link for advising guides now I have not posted.
For fall 20 in spring 21, yet 'cause I'm still working on those updating those. But you will see the 19 and 20 on there an you can literally just go through and look at all of the majors and what you will notice is that every single major are honor. Students are taking the same classes at the same time and so that's where that living learning community really comes into play because we want our students to have the support of others honor students.
Parker C.
06:25:07 PM
For UIS applications, no teacher recommendation and a personal and academic statement of 500-750 words, and SAT scores and transcripts. Is that correct?
Doing the same classes at the same time. So what you're learning in your classroom, you're actually bringing back into the residence Hall and having discussions about that. Working together with your kowert your roommates are sweet means people down the Hall, uhm, and also it keeps you on track. You know, uhm, you wouldn't believe how often roommates you know in suite mate, swollen friends in the honors program would be like, hey, did you start that project, you know, did you, you know?
Are you a working on this? Have you done this? Have you met with your instructor? I mean, they really kind of keep each other on task, which is really great to be a part of a program that everyone is kind of working towards the same goals. Then they're kind of the theme like minded student. And so when you look at those advice.
Amazing guides what you'll see on there is your freshman first semester. You'll take our freshman seminar which is our cap 102 class. It is a two credit hour course that is a seminar class that is.
Marc Klingshirn
06:25:50 PM
A personal statement is required for Honors consideration. I do not receive your application until then. More details to come a bit later in the presentation about the admission criteria.
Pavani U.
06:26:07 PM
How many UIS pre-meds get into medical school
It's designed to be kind of an easy a course. Um, it's not designed to trip students up. It's designed to help students with that transition from high school to college. No matter how ready you are for College in how much, uhm, you know, you know how well you did in high school and all that. No matter if you come to you. I asked if you go to a A2 year institution if you go to another four year institution, that first semester is the most challenging one of the most challenging semesters that you'll have is because you are making that transition.
You're moving away from home. You're living in a residence Hall. You're taking college level courses your time. You have more free time because you're not going from you know 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning until 3:15 everyday. And so the structure of the classes are different in so it is a transition and so that seminar class teaches you all kinds of things. We get you in connection with your mentor. We get you connected with faculty in your major that you're wanting to go into.
Marc Klingshirn
06:27:07 PM
That is a tough question to answer. Our best students usually have no issues. The second year of the science curriculum is usually the litmus test.
Parker C.
06:27:19 PM
How are the research opportunities for sophomores?
There's all kinds of great things that you get to learn in that in that course in it helps with that transition, and so you see on here there is a minimum grade of a C or higher to remain in the honors program. And like I said, that course is designed to be an easy in easy A course. So um, so that shouldn't be a problem for most students. You have to really try not to get AC in that class. I mean not to get an A in that class. I mean, it's it's. It's very helpful though.
With the transition, um? Also, if you look at this advising guides, you'll see your first semester and 2nd semester. You'd have to take a writing compositions sequence which is kept 111 and kept 115. Uhm. A lot of students that we work with are honor students in Fortson High School and they take AP composition, literature and language and literature to meet the English like 101102 curriculum or corset sequence.
Pavani U.
06:28:04 PM
Is there any tutoring/assistance for the MCAT provided by the university?
Marc Klingshirn
06:28:05 PM
Research opportunities depend on the major. We have some first-year students who start on research projects with faculty early on.
Um, the one thing we do honors program is that those AP classes or dual credit English courses well come into you YS indefinitely. Meet hours toward your 120 hours to graduate. However, to be in the Honors Program, you do have to take a writing composition sequence, and I always say this. You know, I've been in my job for 15 years and I have never, ever had a student come to me and tell me that our cap 111 and 1:15 writing sequence.
Marc Klingshirn
06:28:26 PM
Currently, UIS does not offer tutoring for the MCAT.
Is a uhm? Is it repeat of what they learned in their English AP? Um language in literature horses, we have a completely different curriculum. We just hired a brand new coordinator of our writing composition sequence an she's just finishing up her first year and she's kind of revamped that, and so it's just they teach you different ways of writing, and so it's not going to be a repeat. So if you've had English composition.
Marc Klingshirn
06:29:13 PM
We often say that if a student does well in both Organic Chemistry and calculus-based Physics, students often do well on the MCAT. Studying is still essential though.
Coming in just know that can only help you do well in our writing composition sequence, so don't feel like that's kind of a waste or anything like that. It can only help you. And like I said, it is the foundation of our program is the writing and reading portion, and so those courses are essential to our program.
Next in the list is our cap 141 and 142 science sequence, and you'll see on there. It's for non science majors, so any of you who are premed uhm.
Bird biology biochemistry chemistry any course a more even if your psychology major want to go the premed track and have to take our general chemistry, in general biology for your science you would be exempt from taking cap 141 and 142, so it's designed for non science majors in it's also interdisciplinary, so that's another word that the Honors Program
Ahmed A.
06:30:03 PM
Do I need to take MCAT prior or with SAT R?
Courses make it different from the traditional program is that they are interdisciplinary, and So what that means is these science sequence is.
Parker C.
06:30:25 PM
Ok, I'm thinking Biology, but have been advised that research may be too much to take on freshman year. Are the research opportunities listed or do the students seek the professors out ?
Marc Klingshirn
06:30:26 PM
SAT is required for UIS, the MCAT is required for the MCAT.
A combination of biology and chemistry, so you're taught by a biologist and a chemist, and the great thing for you guys is that the chemist is doctor klink, churn and so you have him in the office um and students. I can always tell when there is, uh.
Marc Klingshirn
06:30:53 PM
We help students make connections with faculty who are willing to work with them.
Parker C.
06:31:04 PM
Great!
An exam coming up because there's like a little line of ants that are going into you, know his his office asking questions and he is the most uhm student focused instructor in. Of course he is the director of the program, but his students absolutely come first and so he is always willing to help a student figure out anything that they don't understand. But those are designed for non science majors and so for science majors you would take the general biology sequence in the general chemistry secret.
Erol I.
06:31:15 PM
Do all of these sequences contain lab?
Now the question here is also if you have biology or chemistry AP coming in to uas and you are a non science major we would exempt you from taking the bio chem bio our cap 140 one 142 sequence and um we would just have you take if you came in with AP biology we would have you take a non science major science to meet that requirement. So there is some wiggle room in there about not having to.
Marc Klingshirn
06:31:46 PM
CAP 141/142 have a lab component. The other CAP courses do not.
Katelyn H.
06:31:57 PM
How difficult would it be to double major in sciences?
Repeat that, uhm, so next tier list is our question courses which are also interdisciplinary classes. There's four of them that you'll see the first semester. You'll take kept 122. The second semester you'll take 123 your sophomore year. First semester you'll take 225 and the next semester your last semester of your sophomore year. You'll take cap 226. Now those are sequenced courses. You do have to pass.
Want to move on to the other one?
Marc Klingshirn
06:32:31 PM
To finish if four years, it would take some strategic advising.
And those are also interdisciplinary. So what that means is they meet the humanities and social science requirements for graduation. So if you looked at the curriculum in order to graduate from the University, you would see that you needed six social science credit and six humanities credits in order to graduate from the University. And so, like I said before, as an honor student, you're not taking really additional classes. You're just taking different ones to meet the same.
Parker C.
06:32:49 PM
How many credit hours do your CAP students usually take per semester?
Erol I.
06:33:02 PM
Thank you Dr. Klingshirn.
Parents, and so, um, are kept 120. Two 123 to 25 to 26 courses meet six hours to Humanities in six hours of Social Science in order to graduate from the University. And so you're just taking different classes to meet those same requirements.
Marc Klingshirn
06:33:29 PM
Number of credit hours depends on the student. Some as low as 12, some as high as 18. It all depends on the comfort level of the student.
Erol I.
06:33:30 PM
My question was more for science classes.
Ahmed A.
06:33:35 PM
After graguating from Pre med how will I join medical school?
Those are lecture based courses. There's a lot of reading in there. There is a lot of writing, and there also, um, but those classes. The instructors really want you to come to class. You'll notice at the University or class sizes average between. I don't know 14 and 17 students each class, and so participation in attendance is highly encouraged. Recommended because we want the most students to come to the class and come prepared because.
Katelyn H.
06:33:47 PM
If I’m looking to transfer to OT school, what would you recommend minoring in since there is no minor in exercise science?
Marc Klingshirn
06:33:50 PM
Almost all science classes have a lab.
Erol I.
06:33:59 PM
Thank you Dr. Klingshirn.
If you have a class that has 316 students and eight of them don't come one day, and you're supposed to have this big discussion about something that you read and have the class, isn't there, that discussion isn't, you know, as a meaningful and you don't get as much out of it, and so they really want you to come prepared. And so it's about, you know, reading something. Uhm, so so you know you have a lecture and then you know you might have class discussion for the last half hour of the class about what your thoughts and feelings are.
And bringing up your own thoughts about things in opening up your mind for critical thinking, and so that's where those critical thinking skills also come into play.
Marc Klingshirn
06:34:21 PM
There is a whole process for applying to medical school. That is something I cover during pre-professional advising.
Marc Klingshirn
06:34:40 PM
We have an Exercise Science major now.
And so I didn't say this, but cap 102. Uhm, in the traditional program for freshmen they have a general freshman seminars. Well, so that's another like equivalent course within the traditional program. An honors program, the writing composition sequence in the traditional program, it's English 101 and 102, and then the science sequence. Everyone needs a science, 8 hours of science with lab to graduate. And so that means that requirement in our question for stays.
Ahmed A.
06:34:54 PM
Thank you Dr. Klingshirn
Marc Klingshirn
06:35:17 PM
Biology is a more traditional major, before Exercise Science came along. :)
Meet the six hours of Humanities in six hours of social science. Uhm, we also have a global awareness course that we require our students to take. We call it cap two 5350 because there's lots of options for that. There is 200 and 300 level classes and that requirement just needs to be done sometime before you graduate, so it's not really on the guide. You know necessarily anywhere stuck in there, um, so that can be kind of moved around, but the other courses absolutely must be taken into sequence.
And completed within those first two years. The other class on there is your senior seminar class and that's taken your senior year. We can break it up into two semester.
Katelyn H.
06:35:51 PM
I’m intending to major in Biology and was told that there is no minor in exercise science. Would you recommend something else?
Pavani U.
06:35:55 PM
How easy is it to study abroad as a CAP Honors student?
There's there's a paper in presentation that's involved in that UM and it's it's a really great thing it's kind of almost like a mini thesis if you will come and you do have to have a greater see AC or better in both the paper and presentation in order to past and in graduate from the honors program so that kind of breaks down the curriculum alittle bit an I do encourage you if you haven't to go on to the website and look at those advising guides and see how they all play out within every single major.
OK, so the next slide here is our global awareness requirement. This is kind of the only requirement that is.
Marc Klingshirn
06:36:31 PM
Katelyn-- this is a good advising question. We could look at potential upper-level electives.
Parker C.
06:36:37 PM
So the CAP courses count towards English, Social Studies, Humanities, etc, graduation requirements. Correct?
Not? Uhm, that that is unique to our program. Um, this requirement we want our students to be, uhm, very globally aware, um, about you know, the the world and we have this this requirement. It is 14 to 16 hours that cap two 5350 global issues. Course does me hours towards this requirement. Modern language needs hours towards this requirement. If you're planning to study abroad.
Marc Klingshirn
06:36:51 PM
Pavani - EASY! Most study abroad after their second year.
Marc Klingshirn
06:37:03 PM
That is correct, Parker! :)
Katelyn H.
06:37:09 PM
Okay, thank you!
Um, that was me. Our sources requirement. Alot of classes. Um, some majors have courses that are considered global course days that would also count towards this and so don't look at it is like Oh my gosh, this is an extra 14 to 16 hours. I have to meet. It's really very easy to complete. I do all the audits an make sure our students complete this requirement before they graduate and generally they have absolutely no problem doing that.
Parker C.
06:37:19 PM
Whew! Thanks.
One of the things about the modern language I know a lot of Honor student, uhm, take languages and high school. And some of you have taken four years or three years or six years. Even Anna Foreign Language and what we offer our students is that you're able to take a placement exam to see if you placed out of a semester or two of the language and those hours will actually go towards this requirement. If you place out of something that won't necessarily show up.
On your thumb transcript, because you placed out of it and you didn't pay for it. Basically it wasn't a class that you you know paid for, but for our purposes in the Honors Program, we're going to go ahead and give you credit towards your honors global awareness requirement. And then once that's done once, I see your audit, you know, I do my audit and I see that you've completed that. I'll do a petition to show that that requirement for graduation has been met.
Kristie W.
06:38:25 PM
Can a passing score on the CLEP biology exam exempt me from CAP science courses?
And so don't stress out about this, you know requirement it. It's very easily met. Uhm, once you get involved in once you get on campus and kind of figure out a you know how you can best meet that. Uhm, so then um, your first two years also. Besides the honors courses, you're taking the rest of your general education requirements, so you'll be taking general math. We don't take honors level math, you take general math.
An uhm, your math course will be based on what your major is, and so some students will required to take calculus. Some will not install based on your major, and so you'll be able to look at those advising guides as well to see kind of what math courses you'll be required to take. Um, and you have to take one skills math class in one applied, so for example, a skilled math class would be capped, won an applied math would be statistics. So if you were a business major or anything in the business, college accounting.
Marc Klingshirn
06:39:20 PM
We currently do not accept CLEP credit to get out of the CAP science sequence. If you have AP Bio or Chemistry of some kind, then that changes things. Talk to us if that applies. :)
Kristie W.
06:39:43 PM
Ok thank you!
Economics business admin you know. Whatever it is you would take business calculus and then you would take um business statistics to meet that requirement. And so we's advisors know exactly what you need to take in order to meet those requirements. But there is 2 math classes that are required for graduation. Also on those guides you'll see there's a 3 hour visual creative and Performing Arts Corps.
Marc Klingshirn
06:39:52 PM
absolutely!
That you can be creative in doing, um, where you can take a theater music beginning guitar. You can take a ceramics uhm?
Oh my gosh, art appreciation for those who don't have any artistic ability like myself, um, were music appreciation, so there's tons of options for that. Also, you have to take an oral communication course in order to graduate from the University. And that's just basic public speaking. And then our courses. Like I explained our question, courses to meet six hours of Social Science in order to graduate. But you actually need nine, and so some majors have that additional social science.
First noted on there. Now if you are a social science major such as, uh, you know psychology or sociology, even business econ is considered a social science and so a lot of times that social extra social science course will be met by a prerequisite for your major and then you do. We do accept AP and dual credit class days. And if you're wanting to take a class over the summer, I have a lot of questions. You know, students who want to pick up one of these Gen Ed classes.
Marc Klingshirn
06:41:06 PM
These are all great questions!
Elise B.
06:41:08 PM
Can you talk about Political Science, please?
Erol I.
06:41:12 PM
I have passing scores for AP Bio and Chem.
Over the summer and transfer them into from a Community College, you can absolutely do that. Um. Also, your AP credit like if you have AP Calc or AP statue, or if you even have, you know, maybe something that meets the visual creating performing arts, or if you have an extra social science or even speech coming in. Those will absolutely come in and meet those because they aren't necessarily cap related. They are the University requirements. And so that's my job in this as an advisor to make sure you know that what you're taking will meet.
Erol I.
06:41:40 PM
How would that change my schedule?
Marc Klingshirn
06:41:48 PM
Elise--I'll ask Karen to talk about the major toward the end. :)
Certain things, uhm. And so I always ask you know, once you're a student here and you're taking classes you want to take a class over the summer to meet one of those you would just communicate with Courtney RI to make sure that you're taking the appropriate class in order to transfer those into meet those requirements.
Pavani U.
06:41:58 PM
How long do students typically study abroad for? Also, will medical applicants get help for constructing their resumes and personal statement?
Marc Klingshirn
06:42:04 PM
We would need to sit down with you, Erol.
And then so I don't know even touch really on um your junior and senior year like that is, you know your major courses and so these you know the classes that I kind of talked about today are those first 2 year requirements. Those Gen Ed Lower Division classes that everyone wants to take. It's not necessarily the most exciting because everyone wants to get into their major. But In addition to some of those, if you look at those advising guides, you'll see.
Elise B.
06:42:30 PM
Thank you!
Erol I.
06:42:37 PM
Okay thank you Dr. Klingshirn. Should I contact you later?
Marc Klingshirn
06:42:40 PM
Students study abroad for various time lengths. As short as a month, up to a semester of a whole year.
Parker C.
06:42:47 PM
If I score well on my AP exams, but am a Biology major, I would assume that the credits for AP Stats, AP Chem would not be accepted for my major. Would they be accepted as elective credits?
Maybe some prerequisite courses that are directed towards our major that you have to complete before you're a junior to start your upper division classes and so you know myself, um and Courtney, you know, are very well versed in what requirements are and make sure that you are set to start your major classes your junior year.
Marc Klingshirn
06:43:00 PM
I can help with resumes and personal statements as can our Career Development Center.
And then we can take, you know, extra questions about any of that at the end. But I want to move forward. I know I talk kind of a lot. So um scholarships. So this grid. Basically I'd like I said every honor student does get a scholarship once you are admitted to the honors program, and the scholarship is based on your AC T or S80 an your high school GPA.
And, uh, in order to be considered for the honors program, uhm?
Marc Klingshirn
06:43:40 PM
Parker--they MIGHT be counted toward the major. It all depends on how well you do on them and the department requirements.
Pavani U.
06:43:48 PM
Thank you!!
Parker C.
06:43:49 PM
Can you define "Full Ride"?
You know the minimum ECT requirement is 24 and you'll see the UM equivalent SAT scores 1160 and then at 3.0 is the minimum high school GPA that we look at, and so you'll see where you fall on this grid. If you haven't applied dead or if you were thinking about applying, this is kind of you know how to gauge what your scholarship would look like. Now this is for.
Marc Klingshirn
06:44:13 PM
I'll have Karen mention what that means Parker, toward the end.
Hum a year scholarship. Uhm so you would divide that into two you know half of it for the fallen half of it for this spring uhm. And then underneath each one of those uh amount is a GPA and that is the GPA that you must maintain is a cumulative GPA that you must maintain in order to keep that scholarship for the four years that you're at the University.
Parker C.
06:44:23 PM
Thanks so much.
And so your scholarship is for four years, as long as you maintain that maintenance GPA, we do review your scholarships after every semester, um after the first semester. Say you have to maintain a 3.25 after your first semester, but you only have a 3 point.
Tristan D.
06:44:48 PM
It says 4.0 and above, so is this based on weighted or unweighted GPA?
Pavani U.
06:45:10 PM
How does study abroad work? Is it only for certain colleges in a country? For example, if I want to go to India, would I be able to chose where I go?
11 OK, so you didn't get your 3.25, just know that we do not do anything negative to your scholarship after your first semester, we give you basically your first year to get your GPA. C GPA up to where it needs to be because we know that that first year is a transition year an we want you to be successful. We want you to keep your scholarship and so, um, that's our way of kind of, you know, helping you do that, and hopefully.
Marc Klingshirn
06:45:12 PM
GPAs are normalized to a 4-point scale
You know, after that transition year your you know on the right track and able to move forward, uhm?
Tristan D.
06:45:20 PM
Ok, thank you
Ahmed A.
06:45:30 PM
What do you mean by full ride?
And so, um, your award letter should automatically have your scholarships posted on there. Um already an if they don't, if you're admitted to owners and they don't, you do.
Marc Klingshirn
06:45:42 PM
You could go to India! We had a Global Studies major study there.
Parker C.
06:45:46 PM
Do you stack scholarships?
Just let us know, um. Also, I just wanted to mention really quickly. If you've already applied to UIS in the Honors Program, a man we've admitted you based on your start, your your current as ATR SAT score or GPA and you look at this chart and you got Oh my gosh you know I retook it and I didn't send in my latest scores which would jump me up to the next level. You just email me. Um were doctor Quinn Chernin? Let us know to reevaluate your scholarship.
Norman H.
06:46:08 PM
Do scholarships have the potential to increase throughout the 4 years?
Um, that you've jumped up to the next next level because we want to make sure that we're giving you. You know, all that that that we can.
Marc Klingshirn
06:46:16 PM
Depends on the scholarship. If you accept the Honors scholarship, you cannot retain your Lincoln scholarship.
Up and then In addition to that entry, scholarship, or are, uhm.
Ahmed A.
06:46:38 PM
What do you mean by full ride?
Our scholarship, so I did just want to mention to um, I'm sure all of you have also received the Lincoln scholarship through um at the general admission. Um, an when you're admitted to honors then you get your owner scholarship. Just know that those are two separate scholarships. Um, they're basically based on the track that you're gonna go into. So if you chose to attend uas as a general freshman, then the Lincoln scholarship would be posted to your account.
Kristie W.
06:46:59 PM
As I am homeschooled and I don’t have easy access to AP exams, I have taken and passed many CLEP exams. Do any CLEP exams fulfill any of the CAP required courses?
Parker C.
06:47:09 PM
If I bring in an outside scholarship that could pay for things other than tuition and room and board?
Marc Klingshirn
06:47:22 PM
You can stack that, Parker.
An awarded to you if you choose to do the Honors. Track Your Honor Scholarship would take the place of your link installer ship. They are not. Uhm, they are not combined. Unfortunately when that be great, but they're not. It's kind of one or the other. Um, and but we do have a University, um, scholarships that are given out in there every single year. If you've missed it this year and you're coming to you IS next year, no worries, um.
Parker C.
06:47:34 PM
Thank you
Ahmed A.
06:47:46 PM
Does a full ride mean totally funded?
The scholarship application for uas scholarships come out December 1st in their due February 15th. That application for all uas scholarships outside of like the other scholarship and we're talking about additional scholarships that are available and so we recommend students fill that out every single year up in hopes to get some additional funds. Now those can be tapped on also if you are a student who has.
Kathryn Kleeman
06:47:59 PM
You can stack President's Award Program and Honor Scholarships if you are eligible for both of those.
Marc Klingshirn
06:48:00 PM
Kristie--our CAP classes cannot be tested out of, except for the CAP science sequence.
What do you call it? The children to veterans scholarship or I don't know if they come?
Norman H.
06:48:12 PM
When are notifications for the institutional scholarships going out?
They do the College of Illinois anymore, but if you happen to get a scholarship that covers full tuition, just know that our honor scholarship would cover any additional costs. So like our scholarship owners would go towards your housing if you happen to have a scholarship that covered your tuition. So our scholarship in honors is not just for two wishing if that makes sense.
And so come for the scholarship so you have your your Honor Scholarship, an one of the great things about the honors program is that we were Ward students who go above and beyond zan do really, really well in our program, which is a lot of students that majority of our students do really well and go above and beyond their maintenance GPA. So if we go back and we look at that chart and you have a scholarship that you had, um?
Elise B.
06:48:56 PM
When do we find out about the Institutional Scholarship awards? Nothing has been sent out yet.
Marc Klingshirn
06:48:57 PM
Private donor scholarship decisions are being made now, but decisions have not been released.
To maintain a 3.0 but your first semester, your cumulative GPA was at 3.25. Were able to give you additional $500 bumps up, and so, um.
So those are called in this little slide here. Continuing student scholarships, academic recognition. Those are those bumps and you can get two $500 bumps within the first two years just by going up to the next maintenance level. So if you needed to maintain a 3.0 and you got a 3.25 cumulative, that puts you in that $500. But if you have to maintain a 3.25 but you gotta 3.5, that gives you an eligibility for the 500.
Pavani U.
06:49:48 PM
If I got a full ride, am I still eligible for private donor scholarships?
DARPA, if you have to maintain a 3.5 but you gotta 3.8, that's how you get your $500 buns. Like I said, you can get two of those. And then after every academic year. So after the spring term. Uhm, when we look at in renew scholarships if we have these academic excellence scholarships that we can give students who have a 3.8 three point 9 or 4.0 um. Of course that aren't necessarily on a full ride scholarship that have.
Marc Klingshirn
06:50:39 PM
Pavani--Yes. You are still eligible for them, but your UIS scholarships may be reduced slightly to adjust for those outside funds.
Room to get some more money and those are kind of, uhm a 3.8 gets you a certain amount of money. 3.9 get you a certain amount of money in 4.0 get just certain amount of money and those are non renewable. But um, if you continually maintain at that high level will continually give you that extra money um, and so that's why it says non renewable there but your bumps will stay with you. So if you get a bump after your first semester and 2nd semester
That will absolutely that extra $1000, then 5 two $500 bumps. That extra $1000 will stay with you, your sophomore, junior and senior year. As long as you maintain your original GPA requirement. So that's pretty awesome and we see a lot of students you know do that right away, so that's exciting. Also, the honors program has a cap study abroad scholarship that were able to help with the expenses of studying abroad, and I highly recommend studying abroad. Uas has tons of options for studying abroad.
Uhm, it's an amazing opportunity, and so that's something that you can apply for through the honors program to help with those expenses. And then again we have the University donor scholarships out there as well. That can be also awarded to our students, so that's kind of about the scholarships. I know it's a very brief talk about them and if you are a student who is coming in the fall you will get a very detailed explanation of.
Erol I.
06:51:52 PM
If I am taking 18 credits per semester as shown in the advising guide, and my scholarship covers only 16 credits, do I have to pay only the 2 credits or the entire course?
Pavani U.
06:52:02 PM
Thank you, Dr. Klingshirn! :)
The scholarships, the renewal process, all of that during summer. Orientation anfal um welcome week. So I know it's kind of, you know, maybe kind of confusing but we just kind of wanted to give you an outline of what is available and how you can increase those scholarships. Once you're a student in the honors program in performing well so the next slide here is about our admission process. Those of you who have not applied jacks or have applied but haven't heard from.
Marc Klingshirn
06:52:32 PM
Erol--if you are on a full-ride, CAP Honors will cover up to 18 hours. You must remind me of that, though, since my memory is short sometimes. :) Anything past 18 is covered by the student.
In order to be considered for honors, you first have to apply to the University itself with the general application and then um, from my understanding it's about 8 to 10 days later you'll get like an email that allows you to go back into the system into the application portal in order to be considered for honors. Like I said, You have to have a minimum a city of a 24 or equivalent SAT score of 1160 and a high school GPA.
At 3.0 cumulative high school GPA 3.0 and you must also submit a personal statement. Uhm, the University itself does not require a personal statement for admission. But, um, we find it very important in the honors program to have something that you have written. Because of course, it is a highly writing intensive program and we want to know about you. And this is our way to hear more about you other than just looking at your scores in your.
Erol I.
06:53:51 PM
Thank you Dr. Klingshirn, but my award letter says full scholarship with 16 credit hours fall/spring semester maximum. Does that need to be updated?
You know classes and what you got in your classes, and so we really get an inside look at our students come and it's you know, it's it's a really great thing and I know doctor clean shirt reads them rigs each and everyone of them said so please don't feel like you're wasting your time doing that because he takes a lot of you know steak in those and and um and really really wants to get to know our student. And So what you would need to do is you would then have to go back in after that 8 to 10 days and Re Enter your application portal and then submit your personal statement to the check.
Tristan D.
06:54:29 PM
About how long does it take for a student to be reviewed for the program? And how would one check on the status of said reviewing?
Checklist and then, once you meet our our qualifications, you've been admitted to the University. You have your personal statement in the system, then your application materials will automatically come over to honors for review, and so you don't have to do anything else. As long as you do all that, um, you will be, um, at least considered for the Honors Program. Now, if you are admitted, or like I like to say, we extend an offer or an invitation for you to participate.
Marc Klingshirn
06:54:32 PM
Erol--16 is the norm, so we keep that in the verbiage.
In the honors program, because you do have an option of course at that point, if you're admitted to the program, you can either choose to come to you. I ask as you know a general freshman, or you can you know choose to come as an honor student. So, um.
Marc Klingshirn
06:55:00 PM
Any student is welcome to e-mail me a mklin2@uis.edu to inquire about your application.
So anyway, so in order to, uh, accept the offer admission, you have to 1st go in and sign your intent to enroll form and then you can choose to participate than in the Honors Program, or take the offer of admission to the honors program and then will change that in the system for you.
Tristan D.
06:55:12 PM
Cool
So uhm, OK, let's go one more here. Just important information, especially for those who have already committed to coming in the fall. We congratulate you and work cited for that. And so we just wanted to give you some important information. Um, to look forward too. So if you have a pen and paper, I want to drop this.
Norman H.
06:55:54 PM
How does the roommate selection process work for Honors Students with RoomSync?
Katelyn H.
06:56:04 PM
Could you please go back to the last slide?
Marc Klingshirn
06:56:09 PM
Yes. I do believe that is the program that is used.
Found that the Gray or if you want to send an email to us and we can, you know, give you this information. But if you've already applied for rooming assignments, they should be going out sometime early July. Move in is set for Wednesday, August 19th. Unless you were an athlete who are starting a sport. Uhm, and it's a fall sport, you would move in early, but the majority of our freshmen won't move in on August 19th and then that starts launch week where you will get tons of information.
Marc Klingshirn
06:56:17 PM
I'll ask her to move back, Katelyn,
Kathryn Kleeman
06:56:26 PM
Yes, RoomSync is used by UIS
Uh, we will have a lot of great, um social activities during that time as well, but that starts Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and those are mandatory events. And so if you have a job or something you want to make sure that that you're available during those days because there's a lot of mandatory events and things happening. You'll have your first class of 102 during that time, and they'll be like some sort of project that it will have to do so. And then first day of classes start on Monday, August 24th.
Norman H.
06:56:37 PM
Thanks! Will we be getting information about RoomSync soon?
Erol I.
06:56:39 PM
Thank you Dr. Klingshirn.
Katelyn H.
06:56:39 PM
Thank you!
A man I'm going to leave that up there so you can uhm.
Add write that down if you'd like, and so I'm gonna open it up now that was my last flight. I don't know how I did on time. How did I do in time, oh.
Kathryn Kleeman
06:56:54 PM
You should received RoomSync info after the housing application.
We've got about four minutes, Karen.
Oh my gosh, see I couldn't even go fast.
Maggie J.
06:57:04 PM
Are freshman orientation dates still the same?
But that's OK, so I've been typing like a Fiend with all these fantastic questions. But I've got two. I was wondering if you can very quickly describe what the full ride represents. Again, what all is paid?
Jessica J.
06:57:14 PM
How do you sign up for housing with an emotional support animal?
Kathryn Kleeman
06:57:17 PM
@Maddie, yes orientation dates are still the same.
Norman H.
06:57:23 PM
Okay, I haven't received that information yet.
Maggie J.
06:57:27 PM
Great, thank you so much!
Alexander M.
06:57:39 PM
Is the cost for orientation still the same even though it is online?
Absolutely. So in order to be considered a full ride, you have to have at least a 32 AC T or equivalent Ashley to score up, and then you have to have a cumulative uas GPA. High school GPA of 3.5 to be considered a full ride. So if you're offered a full ride scholarship, congratulations on that. You should be super proud of yourself. That's amazing. Are full ride scholarship covers up to 16 credit hours a semester.
Katelyn H.
06:57:48 PM
If I have been accepted into the L4L and Honors Program, where do I stay?
Kathryn Kleeman
06:58:06 PM
@Norman, orientation inform should be going out very soon. We have had a lot of work to do to move the entire summer piece of the program online.
Marc Klingshirn
06:58:11 PM
with Honors, Katelyn. :) But many Honors are part of both groups.
Um, it covers your housing. It covers, uhm, well room and board so it covers your housing in your meal plan. Um, an any fees associated with tuition and all that. So really everything is covered except for like a $2 student to student grant fee and your books. We've tried to get books covered and we just can't do it and so unfortunately it does cover everything but books.
Michael S.
06:58:30 PM
Are there other ways to get full ride besides the honors scholarship?
And so we say it's a 16 hour um limit on that. But if by chance alot of majors, uhm, you know, depending on three and four hour classes and things, sometimes it works out where you have to take 17 or 18 hours a semester, uhm?
Kathryn Kleeman
06:58:32 PM
@Alexander, the cost is still the same for orientation. The university heavily underwrites the cost of orientation.
Katelyn H.
06:58:35 PM
Thank you! Would my roommate also be apart of both?
Marc Klingshirn
06:58:47 PM
It often works out that way. :)
And that's no problem, as long as you're maintaining and keeping your full ride. You do have to maintain a cumulative uas GPA by 3.8 to keeper full ride for all four years. And if you happen to go over the 16 hours, all we do is we just ask that you email doctor clincher and let him know that you're taking a couple extra hours or that you're taking an online class that has an online fee, which we wouldn't normally cover, but we will if you let us know we'll be able to do that.
Norman H.
06:59:02 PM
Thank you! But I was referencing the RoomSync information, even though I have submitted the deposit.
Also, um, it does cover the, UM, the lowest.
Erol I.
06:59:12 PM
Could we take online summer classes?
Katelyn H.
06:59:12 PM
Awesome! Thank you so much Dr. Klingshirm!
Marc Klingshirn
06:59:29 PM
scholarships do not apply to summer courses.
Residential um dorm meal plan. A residence home meal plan which I I don't know if it'll change for next year, but uhm it was like 1100 and $50 a semester and so if you wanted to go up and pay, you know the $1500 or wanted to do the $1500 meal plan then you would have to cover that additional or that you know, uhm?
What do you call that, um, the amount?
Tristan D.
06:59:41 PM
balance
Does that answer the question?
Erol I.
06:59:48 PM
Thank you Dr. Klingshirn.
Paxton L.
06:59:55 PM
Thank you
I've got one more. I don't know if we're going to get cut off here. It's almost 7:00 o'clock, but I believe it was Emily that was asking before. If you could say something about the political science major, what you know about it?
Elise B.
07:00:10 PM
I asked about that. Thank you!
Kathryn Kleeman
07:00:12 PM
@Norman, reach our to reslife@uis.edu about your deposit and application.
Oh my gosh, yes, absolutely, uhm. The political science major is one of our most popular majors. Of course you know we are, you know, the state capital. So internships and those experiences are amazing. Um, our faculty are great in the political science program. Also, it is super easy to like double major.
Marc Klingshirn
07:00:32 PM
Sorry, Elise...I called you Emily. Apologies! :)
Norman H.
07:00:39 PM
Okay, Thank you!
In political science and maybe legal studies, those two majors are very closely connected. an A lot of classes overlap with each other, and so a lot of students will either major in political science and minor in criminal justice. I mean in legal studies.
Political science in criminal justice. A lot of students do that. Um, some students, um, um. They become some. We have this page program. I think that stole actually happening, I believe, um, within the UM.
The state, uhm? What do you call it?
Yes, the courthouse there the not courthouse. But what is that the capital? No yes.
So there's a lot of opportunities for that, and a lot of the political science classes also overlap with our global awareness requirement, and so you're kind of killing two birds with one stone. But I'm highly recommended. Students are very successful in that program, and like I said, it's very easy to double major or even major and minor, and that as well. Yes, and it please look at the advising guides online.
Parker C.
07:01:43 PM
I'm still concerned about the time commitment of the senior project. Who could I email to speak about it further?
Um, if you can again go to the agency index. Capital Star Wars honors program curriculum and then advising guides and then feel free to peruse all of those.
Kathryn Kleeman
07:01:53 PM
@Elise, on the north wing of LRH you can see the capitol from your room if you are on the third floor.
So Karen, I'm going to jump in here, so Parker had a question regarding the senior project.
It it is as Karen said kind of like a mini thesis, but you work, you work on your project over the course of an entire semester unless you are pressed for time and you take it all, and you do it all during your final spring term, but it's the faculty who work with you during the process are very good at it. They kind of walk you through the process in chunks.
And we we have students who end up doing their honors thesis In addition to a thesis in political science or a thesis in psychology at the same time. So yes, it is a. It is a time commitment. But at the same time it's an honors thesis and it does take a bit of time. And it does take some research and investment, but we have a lot of students. Again, who do two of them at the exact same time and are very very successful at it so.
Elise B.
07:02:58 PM
That would be great! Thank you! I've already accepted the UIS offer and am looking forward to attending in the August.
Um, and by the time you've been here for three years, you'll be ready to go and know exactly what you want to do, and you'll just be Gung Ho and just going at it. So I wouldn't worry too much about it at this point.
Yeah, I I kinda don't even like mentioning it because.
Kathryn Kleeman
07:03:37 PM
@Elise, That is great!!! You can eat it, sleep it, breathe it! You can go down and see hearings and all kinds of good stuff and we have tons of alums working there.
Erol I.
07:03:38 PM
Will kickstart be online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic?
Didn't seem overwhelming at this point. When you're just thinking about whether you want to go to, you know school or not, and like here we are talking about your senior year. But by the time you get There you are going to be able to write so well in the teachers are right there by your side and public speaking will be like nothing at that point, Lake. It's it's really a great process and it would help you, especially if you're wanting to go on to Graduate School. Uhm, you know. Or something like that, so don't.
Parker C.
07:03:46 PM
Ok, thanks. I'll try not to worry.
Paige W.
07:03:52 PM
At orientation will someone walk us through the required classes
Any other questions? I wish they could talk to me.
I see one last question from Errol. I think I'm hoping I'm passing that correctly. He asks will kick start beyond line this year. Do the Coco VAT 19 pandemic.
Yes, I believe Kickstart is. Uhm, is were absolutely planning to have um, from my understanding and Catherine, I don't know if you want to write something and stop me, but um, that it there will be up on line. It's almost like, um, um, like a conference or something on line. There's like you have to go through like certain segment where you learn about like for pie. And uhm, you know.
Michael S.
07:04:46 PM
How much will it cost if it's online? Still $170?
Meal plans and, um, you'll meet with advising will do you're advising according I will do your advice seen over the phone probably, or zoom up and you'll. You'll get all of the information during kickstart. Uhm, but it will be. We won't be able to have you on campus. It will be like a remote process, and I know that there's a team of people working on getting that together. Um, and so, um.
Kathryn Kleeman
07:05:17 PM
@Erol, KickStart will be online with synchronous and asynchronous pieces. We will facilitate meeting other students and interactions with Orientation Leaders and then other parts you will do on your own time.
Maggie J.
07:05:20 PM
Will we be registering for classes at that time or sooner?
So unfortunately I don't believe will be able to do our normal on campus, um orientation, but you know, the hope is that, UM, yes it will be, you know, giving you all the information you need to be successful in ready to start in the fall.
Maggie J.
07:05:36 PM
During Kickstart?
Erol I.
07:05:47 PM
Thank you for the clarification Dr. Kleeman.
Maggie J.
07:05:49 PM
I am an athlete
Parker C.
07:06:01 PM
Do CAP students register before other students?
I just saw that yes, you will be registering for classes you will, uhm, I believe what the process is going to be. Um is, unless you're an athlete. I don't know if you're an athlete, but um, um, you will, um, go through so much of the orientation on line. The course is the pieces, and once you hit a certain amount that you've completed, I think that the advising will open up. And then our says Advisors will get some kind of confirmation that you've completed so much of.
Tristan D.
07:06:21 PM
How will the cost be handled if Kickstart will be online?
Kathryn Kleeman
07:06:22 PM
@Maggie, Nicole Hager will be working with you and you should have already gotten an email from her.
With the orientation and that you are eligible to then register for classes and then so you'll work with Courtney or myself and we will of course get get you registered. I will be sending out information. Um, um.
No Nicole hangar will not be working with her 'cause she is. If she's an honor student, she'll still be working with me, um, and so she would have gotten an email from Nicole Hager. Uhm, that talks about four honor student. Here's the process is going to happen in the process. Is working with Courtney and I for advising we have your practice schedules and we work around all that and we do end up letting Nicole Hager no what your schedule will be. Uh, but Courtney and I actually will be starting to work with.
Maggie J.

Thank you for holding this webinar, it was very helpful! :)
Athletes, um for advising. Our plan was to do it like this week or last week, but um, hopefully maybe next week, will be able to start doing that. A man for every student. We will be contacting you about placement testing. Please submit math placement testing if you're needing to do math. Placement testing will be contacting you and letting you know that you need to do that and that you'll be able to do that remotely as well, and so will give you all the information for that as well. So Maggie, please lookout for you know.
Courtney, I you know to be you know, connecting with you soon.
