How's it going? I know that our first session is running just a couple minutes late, so don't worry, we will be getting started here with YUIS and the I haven't applied yet webinar here in just the next minute or so, but we're looking for we're going to have a ton of fun. It's going to be really interactive and I'm looking forward to getting a chance to meet many of you virtually.

Hello everyone, If anyone has questions throughout the presentation feel free to drop them here and I'll be happy to answer them.
Well, how is everybody doing today? Thank you so much for joining us and I'm really excited to be the host of this web and RYUIS and kind of talk to you a little bit more in detail with some of what Natalie went through already with the application process. And really, what to expect now as you just see on the chat, one of my one of my close friends and coworkers, Jonathan, just posted that he is here for you during this chat.
Aaron Boettcher

Hello everyone. I am Aaron Boettcher, admission counselor at the University of Illinois Springfield. I want a very active and engaging chat and webinar, so I am starting with this question. What are you looking forward to most when you think about attending college at UIS?
I want this to be an active webinar and so I'm going to start it off with this question for you.
Please take a minute, put your answers on the chat. That way we can really get a sense for who's here.
What kind of information they need so we can make sure that we cover that in more detail today?
Real quick, some housekeeping. Things that that I want you to know. The best web browsers to view. This typically are Chrome and opera. If for some reason you're having trouble seeing the slides, you can click full screen and you'll be able to see things a little bit better and in terms of what we're going to cover today, we're going to have a little bit of everything. I'm going to give you the inside look to what Illinois Springfield's all about. From the admission side to some of the jobs.
To even one of the intern ships that Natalie talked about and then I'm going to finish it off with you getting a chance to your phone of our students about exactly what their careers and how active they could get on our campus. But to start with, since you've got to listen to me for most of this, I'm going to let you listen to our students real quick. This is a really quick and short video that goes through our students and why they chose to come and what kind of experience they've received so far. Being at Illinois Springfield.
Aaron Boettcher
01:37:50 PM
What stood out to you most about the video and hearing from our students?
So after seeing a video like that, I think the best question ask yourself is why UIS? Why does students choose to attend? Well, in addition to being part of the world class, you advice system, University of Illinois, Springfield has been named a top regional University in the Midwest for the last 13 years by US news and world reports. We value our relationships with our students as well. That means that we're teaching focus. Whether you're an on campus or online students, professors are the same. They know their students by name. And as Natalie said.
Earlier we have courses that train professors on how to teach affectively on line, were right sized students are able to be involved, multi generational classrooms much like the workplace, and they're going to get to know their classmates.
Finally, we're dedicated to public service and leaders and we have a long history of producing involved citizens on our campus.
So what does that look like? Well, right now we have 31 bachelors degrees, 20 Masters in one doctoral degree program. Uas is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, which is the regional accrediting body for the North Central Section in the United States. This accreditation validates all. Yep, all of the DUI S degree offerings both on campus and online.
Well, we are one of three schools in the UI system. Unlike our two sister campuses, uas is much smaller, and that's by design. With only 13 to one student to faculty ratio, meaning Illinois Springfield has the feel of a private school with the benefits of public school costs and the resources of the UI system.
What does that mean? Well, Illinois Springfield this year was ranked 5th in the Midwest for our students graduating with the lowest amount of loan debt.
So that's what we mean by private school benefits. Public school cost. Because when it comes to those kinds of costs at resources like we're offering, that doesn't happen at many schools in the country.
While we've had that few of a small private school, we have the opportunities and resources of a public institution. Our students learn to be leaders both on and off campus. Through research, internships, service, and even study away opportunities. Research opportunities are available with faculty at the undergraduate level. You do not have to wait to be a graduate student. Internships are a big part of our campus culture. What does that mean?
Majors like Business Administration, Criminology and criminal justice, they're requiring an internship to graduate, and we require something that means we have to know that we're going to have the resources to make that happen for you. Service is also a big part of our campus culture.
We're in the heart of our two year old student Union brand new building on campus is our volunteer and Civic Engagement Center. There are weekly opportunities for our students to give back to the community and in act like an engaged citizen and that leads me to what I want to show you. Next when I talk about internships and Opportunities. I know Natalie mentioned our Illinois Innocence Project, but I want to tell you a little bit more about it and then show you a quick video. We right now are the only school in the nation thousand Innocence Project like this.
Without a law school attached to our campus, most of the top law schools in the country have a program like this that they brag about their students. Can Internet large students are doing that from day one on our campus. Think about putting that on your law school application, so I want to show you what that really means so that you can envision what our students are doing on a daily basis.
Hopefully that gives you a great sense to what our students are doing outside of the classroom, how involved that they can actually get into their passions, their interests, and what they want to be apart of. So How does that happen? What happens in the admission requirements? And so that's what we're going to go through now I'm going to go through some general information, and then we're going to break it up by freshman transfer graduate and so that you really understand international what you really understand. What is going on now for this past fall?
You would talk to anybody. We did waive our application fees. Now those application fees are back, but I've got great news for you if you apply to Illinois Springfield in the next 5 days. Yup, five days, you get to do it for free.
Aaron Boettcher
01:44:37 PM
https://www.uis.edu/admissions/applytoday/
That's right, applying in the next 5 days means free, and that's something that I would really encourage you to do.
And on the on the chat I just put the link directly to the applications. You would select the right application for you and you're in your style that you're coming in and that will do that for you.
Now, typically once all your documents are in, you'll see in decision within about three to four weeks at most. Now there's a few things that everybody needs to know, and then we'll go into more detail by by each level. But the first, most every time we're going to need transcripts were going to need transcripts, so.
Right now you can send your transcripts and how you need to send it will vary based on if you are domestic or foreign. Issued documents for transcripts of US institutions, United States institutions please have those documents mailed by your school to uas via post or email to incoming transcripts and that transcripts is with an s@uas.edu. All transcripts issued by foreign institutions will require a Macy's member course by course of valuation.
Macy's, which is the National Association of credential evaluation services, is an Association of credential evaluation that provides credential valuation services for individuals who have completed their education outside of the United States. This evaluation will establish degree equivalencies and your US GPA. I'm going to skip talking about English proficiency requirements right now and then we're going to get to freshman here in a minute.
Finally, something to keep in mind is that our admissions process takes a holistic review.
This means it's not just your grades or scores on a test that help you gain admission, but how you express yourself in personal statements. For programs that do not require personal statements, I would suggest you still consider submitting while it's not required. It's good information that assists those evaluating your application to gain that Fuller picture of you and allow them to make that holistic review.
Freshman freshman is one of the population groups that will have a personal statement requirement.
And that gives us a chance to really see who they are.
We allow it to be very open so that you can talk about what you need to talk about.
If you've written a great college essay that you really like for class, you can submit that as well. Also, Illinois Springfield is test optional for admission. That means you will be able to be reviewed for admission for scholarships and for possibly into the honors program with no AC, T or S80 required.

Hi my name is Lucas, I’m a junior at a highschool in southern Illinois and I’m looking at a career in law or politics, so I’m looking at what will be the best school for a Political Science degree and will offer the most experience. I’m looking at UIS because of its location by the Capitol and its smaller scale. I want to do some kind of work or internships through the Capitol because I want to go after public office. I was wondering is there a program like University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where if you make under a certain amount your tuition is free?
Optional does mean if you've got a great essay T or AC T that you've taken through your school and you want to submit, that will utilize that in your holistic review, but it's not required and we can start that admission decision without having those documents. Once we have your application, hopefully you're going to waive that fee and apply in the next 5 days. Transcripts and personal statement we will have everything needed to start to review an issue. Scholarships to you in the future in terms of.
If you're a junior 'cause I just saw that question come in.
Next year when you're a senior, we'll talk.
And will make sure that you get that free application. I'll teach you how that works.
We will talk about scholarships here at the end, Lucas and I will not forget your question.
Lucas Schilling
01:48:24 PM
Thank you!
For transfer students, it's a little bit different in terms of what we're looking at. Same thing you can waive your app fee by applying within the next 5 days, and we consider a transfer student to have more than 30 college credits. You will be admitted if you're an on campus student with a 2.0 GPA or higher, why? Because then you've proven yourself at the college level. We know that you can handle college work on line Bachelor degree programs sometimes have specific requirements, and so for online we gather the information in our office.
But the on line program themselves makes your admission decision. My advice. Always contact your admissions counselor and we can get you in contact with your online program coordinator to make those connections. Both of the freshmen and transfer level we offer a ton of Merit Scholarships, both starting at a 3.0 unweighted GPA. There are additional scholarships on top of that, like 5 Theta Kappa or additional scholarships on the freshman side that raise those scholarships to a very.
For transfer students, we also have a few other resources that I want to point out.
If you go to our admissions website and click on transfer, you can look at our transfer guides. They list courses at the Community College level and how they transfer in not just the Illinois Springfield, but to your specific program.
A general guide is also available for students whose Community College is not listed.
2 + 2 agreements allow students to begin pursuing their area of study while attending a Community College.
As a student, you can then seamlessly transfer to Illinois Springfield to finish your bachelors degree.
Joint agreements are for students who are going to be getting an advisor while they attend a Community College, so we'll actually have a UI S advisor that works with you. You would need to do that within your first semester at the Community College so that we can make sure that we are meeting not just your degree requirements at the Community College, but also for Illinois Springfield.
For online we have 14 on Line Bachelors degree completion programs which have been ranked in the top 10% in the nation by US news and world reports, which allows transfer students the opportunity to obtain a uas degree from the comfort of their own home.
So let's talk a little bit about graduate admission.
Again, for students that started this fall, we waive the app fees, but.
Again, those application fees are now back on, so it's a big advantage to apply within the next 5 days so that we can waive those.
Typically for Graduate School, most GPA requirements for many of the programs is a 2.5, but check for any higher GPA requirements by program as well as any additional program requirements that are not common to the admission process. As most graduate programs have their own set of admission requirements, the reason that they all differ is due to the program specific accreditations or the type of program that you that you are entering. Some require a test like the jirari or GMAT.
While others have their own writing tests that they administer, it's important to look at the program site.

How can you complete the English Proficiency?
So that you can, and you can always reach out to the admissions office for help. Admissions does not make final decisions about graduate admissions. Graduate programs do, but we can help you understand their requirements.
Now first I want to point out for international students, the link here is a great resource to see everything that's required for admission. All transcripts issued by the foreign institutions requiring a CS members course by course evaluation.
We will also require proof of English proficiency.
English tests that US will accept at this time, as well as the scores needed to gain entry into our various programs are included on the 1st link of this slide. Please note that the Masters in management information systems and communication programs have differing English requirements. We do have an option to apply for an English requirement waiver for that requirement. We mean nations like Canada, England or Australia when we state.
Native speaking, but nations that we recognize for English as the official language are also nations like Nigeria, Ghana, the Gambia and Singapore.
Even if the form is submitted, we will not waive requirements until all documents are received for admission. For your application. This includes if you're a citizen of a country with English as its official language.
This slide is a really quick look at the testing requirements for graduate students and for undergrad students, so please take a look at that. This gives you an idea depending on which type of English proficiency exam you've taken.
Work the scores that we are looking for.
Jhonatan Martinez Balderas
01:53:50 PM
There's a variety of ways to meet the English Proficiency requirement. Some of the most common are the TOEFL or IELTS. More info can be found on our website.
I tip one of the things listed here is currently offering an on line exam in response to COVID-19.
Now I want to start off by talking a little bit about funding your graduate education, because when we talked about undergraduates, we talked about guaranteed scholarships based on GPA and things like that. Well, Graduate School is a little bit different. Uas provides graduate students with a program called the graduate public service internship and graduate assistantship work opportunities which serve as the primary sources of aid at the graduate level. Just like any job search.
Election for gradual public service intern, otherwise known as GPS I or gypsy and GA programs. The graduate assistant programs is competitive, but certainly worth the effort.
383 different opportunities on campus for graduate interns. An assistance GPS I provides work experience in a number of state of Illinois governmental offices and nonprofits. Examples include the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Department of Public health, EPA, and many other offices. Graduate assistants, on the other hand, actually work on campus, assisting a Department on campus. Those examples can be administrative support like atie, instruction support, gradual research assistance.
Research on campus. Pre professional research assistants or duties directly connected to a field of study off campus. Both graduate positions offer tuition waivers, monthly stipends and some funds for professional development. You can either email me or look at our website For more information and will be posting our emails on the chat once we get done.
Student work positions are also available to both undergrad and graduate students positions on campus like those in the student union or an administrative office. Not only pay you, but provide you with the experience in the connections that will be a valuable asset for you when you begin your post graduation job hunt. Please note that you'll need to be admitted to UIS to apply for these job opportunities. There are a few rounds of interviews for some of these positions, so don't worry if you notice that one of the deadlines has passed.
There are different opportunities during the year to interview for all of these different types of positions.
I want to cover this again. The changes for fall 2021. first Test optional. That means no S80 no AC requirement either for scholarships, admission or even the Honors Program. We are also offering a ton of virtual options for our students, families, an everybody to stay connected.
First US is accepting visitors. You can come for a campus visit. You can come on campus to meet with our counselor, so if that's something that you want to do, that is something we are doing. But we also have virtual opportunities. Those include one on one virtual appointments with counselors setting up a quick phone call. If you've got questions or international counselor is very good about setting up different opportunities to speak because that's not as easy to make those quick calls. So we try to do those through on line means.
And we also have all changes due to COVID-19 pandemic are located on our front page of our website by clicking on covid you can see our testing results. And yes, we're testing students, faculty, staff and anybody coming to campus once a week. We have students living on campus. We have students going to class on campus and we have an active campus this fall.
The Office of admissions. We have counselors who are available to meet with students, parents, counselors, or anybody else in this process. Our admissions counselors are able to answer any question regarding uas, the admission process, and some financial aid questions.
Have specific questions? Are you not able to make it the campus fine UIS? We actually have three or regional counselors in the Chicago land area who can meet with families in the North and northwest suburbs, which is actually myself. The city of Chicago, which is Jonathan that's chatting with you and our South and Southwest suburbs with his marla. We also have another counselor who helps cover Chicago as well, and he is available both on campus and in the area. Uas also has international admissions counselor Anna, who introduced herself during the first.
Webinars today who can answer any questions regarding international admissions. Jonathan, who's on this chat is also bilingual and can answer any questions for you or your family. In Spanish, we have a counselor portal through slate that allows your guidance counselors, anan people helping you to see the status of your application if need be. So if you have a question, once you apply you will see who your counselor is and you can reach out to us in any way. Now. Finally, I want to show you.
What a student looks like on campus and what I mean by that is how active they can get with all the different resources and all the different activities.
I know sometimes when you hear somebody talking about opportunities on campus, it's tough to visualize, but this young man was in the dodgeball club, the gardening club, the knitting and crocheting club mentor on campus. So you don't just have to join one type of thing. He was active in. Hola switches a Latino group on campus and so I hope that that gives you a chance to sort of envision what your life as a Prairie star could look like. You can take it in any road that you want, but I believe.
That those students that have a passion for their future Excel on our campus. So what are the next steps will hopefully you take advantage of that free application and apply now there's a link to that, as well as once you finish that application, you can check your admission status at all times, submit documents, get contact information which includes our direct phone numbers, emails at anytime on your status page.

To contact admissions to figure out where to send documents. This page is for you. That's got our address. You can send transcripts to the address that you can use for an ACC evaluation. That's the email to the office and will get you in contact with the right admissions counselor on the chat. Right now I'm putting my name, email and direct phone number so that you can reach out anytime that you have questions. And I'm always here for you Illinois Springfield. This special place being a Prairie star is a special thing and.

I really look forward to working with many of you this year. Please if you've got questions on the chat, you can put those down. I know Lucas you had a question about internships public office in wondering if there are programs where if you make under a certain amount your tuition is free. Well, here's the good news Lucas, there's a reason that we rank for the fifth lowest debt in the Midwest, and that's because we offer more scholarships. We offer more funding than most of the schools that are doing that. Tuition is free, so.
If you if you send me an idea of where you sit on that and you can email me and we can talk directly about that, my guess is.
Full map faupel actually cover more than full tuition at UIS. If you get an academic scholarship with all of your funding, you won't just get tuition for free. You're probably looking at tuition plus for free, and that's where we really go, above and beyond.
Even though it's not an official promise program like you mentioned about Illinois and Urbana Champaign, there's a reason that we haven't had to do that, and that's because we have some amazing resources on campus to help fund the education of our students in every way on campus. So if you want to go into politics, please email me. After this, I actually just did a web and R and we're going to be doing these throughout the year where we actually go and I I work with somebody in that program and I did one last week about political science, government law.
And we went through all the opportunities are students have. So if you can email me let me know where you want to go into. What's that dream job in political science and government? I'll let you know about all the opportunities on campus, how we can not only get you a bachelors but a Masters like with that graduate public service internship program for freeing and how you can really actively be involved with what's going on in the government. Are students just aren't doing papers for class? They're going downtown there. Parts of committees.
They're talking with a politician before they vote. They have an active role in what's going on, and so that's where I think we become really special and those networking opportunities are second to none. There is no school right now in the state of Illinois that can match even close to what we can do in anything dealing with political science, government, or law. So, great question, Lucas, I know Cassandra Jonathan kind of talked a little bit about how you can complete the English proficiency, but again, if you've got questions reaching out directly to me or Jonathan, we can either get you in contact with Anna Bradford.
Our international counselor or get you the information you need to make sure you're getting everything. Any other questions 'cause I know there's some sessions don't feel bad if you've got to get off. I know there's a couple of sessions starting at 2:00 o'clock and I don't want you to be late for those, but please ask those questions that you have so that we can make sure that you get everything answered today while you're here with us.

Thank you
You are welcome. Jay Don, I really appreciate you being a part of this today and I really hope that you've got a great chance. And just like it was telling Lucas, if you want to email us with that dream job we can get you more information about what that's going to look like and what that route is being a Prairie star on campus.

It was a great webinar. Thankyou
Thanks so much hams. I appreciate that. And again, like I said, if you've got direct questions about where you want to be and what that dream is then please let us know. We're here for you and that's that's what Springfield's all about students with the passion students that have a goal for that future when they get on our campus, allowing them every opportunity to be successful both in and outside of class and making sure that we're not just giving them options that were giving them.
Options in the areas that they have the most interesting and we're always updating that. Always changing that and so thank you guys so much. I'll let you get to your next sessions and again, thank you for being a part of of our discovery UI S today.
