Yeah, OK, so I'm curious switzer. I am the chair color and the other person in the web and are today with me is Andy Jeezy. He is in charge of the undergraduate advising in the Arts and Sciences and what we're going today is tell you a little bit about our college and that they are lumpy and as I give you some big change about the college but also talk about some of the highlights. The slides that you're going to be seeing our some of our majors and minors so at.
Scientist, we have 13 undergraduate majors. We have successors, degrees and we have several majors and minors and I'm just going to wait for it to get caught up here to consider major couple of our majors and minors in terms of some of the highlights of the college. We have lots of great lab spaces where students can get hands on experience in their major an on the slide. There you can stop with. The photos are the lab spaces that we have our exercise.
Science, an athletic training programs and their brand. New class spaces. They're really nice. Another highlight of our college is our partners with circles and field station at Emiquon. That is a little bit North of Springfield. It's an actual working field station that focuses on restoration ecology and so we have classes to go out there. And just like these, but also students and faculty go out there to do research. So it's a great partnership that we have with them.
In college we play as a whole in education.
In the garage level artists, we have six undergrads.
On degrees and two credit online degrees you can complete without ever coming to campus, which is really nice, especially now.
I'm not.
Majors that we have and then you couple of quotes with you as we transition into the other part of the presentation. So I'm going to briefly talk about some of the highlights that I see of our college with faculty perspective, and on this next slide I have my name and contact information. If you have questions after the presentation, please you can email me. Lots of students, but I am happy to answer any questions because I honestly don't think of some tell the webinars over and that's fine. So one of the highlights for me is.
That we have small class sizes at UAS and psychology is one of the largest majors in the University. But even the largest majors, we still have small class size is our largest class is our introductory scientist ecology class that he has at most 30 points in it. Most of our other classes have between 20 and 25 students, and then some of our slow have between 10 and 15 students. So even though we're a large major, we still have small classes, which means that you get in on one attention with your professors. We actually know who you are and we really do want you to succeed.
See that as a highlight and sitting back by yes.
And I love their options in clubs that we have. I always tell students when you get to UAS join something because it's a way to start your social network and akarere network and one of the nice things that you asked at the beginning of each semester is an involvement Expo where all of the clubs and organizations showcase themselves to new students and also let you know how you can sign up for them. And I believe the one in the spring will be sure it will be virtual.
The inspection example, we have an Honor Society Seikai, but we also have an undergraduate psychology cloud that anybody can belong to and they be there be together. I've listed some of the activities that they do there on the slide, so from a student perspective I lie. I would like all of the things that are going on that you can.
Nation and class.
And I are the internship opportunities, so I also encourage people if you can to do an internship at some point during your degree. An internships are good for a couple of reasons. One is they come in can't drink in is really what you want to do as a career. They are also great for it's putting experience on a resume or a Graduate School. At the end we have an internship opposite UIS that has staffed. So to me that's one of the great time for all of these internship opportunities.
Define hundred talked about is and especially if you're planning to go to Graduate School, it's a good idea to get some sort of research experience as a student, an undergraduate student trouble of ways that you can do that at you. I am one. If I get back to member on their research projects, which assistant, but you can also proposing research that Ian have a faculty member supervised act and that is also great experience to put on a Graduate School application or resume at you have.
A two day event that takes place every every year in the spring where all of the students who have been working on any sort of creative product research project present what they've been doing. We called it student, Technology Arts and Church Symposium stars for short, and so we had events that research presentations that you would think of that we also have an art exhibits, music performances applying, reading. So students have been engaging in any sort of thing like that across the campus, come together and see what everybody's been doing. So those are a few of the things that.
I see as the highlights and the next is when you load about active advising and then at the end we're happy to take any of you. So Andy, I will.
Put your sleight of hand over to you.

Oh, I have slides. Even better I've got. I'm just going to go for it, so I'll do slides. Thank you. I also want to put up. I'm going to put in that area. My email address so like Doctor Switzer says if you come up with a question later, absolutely email me. We want to make sure that you have all the questions.
Why is there a lot of different types of advising, but it is basically a model in which we try to put the right person with the right student. So when students Inter University of Illinois, Springfield have a freshman, we do have a group of freshman advisors who only work with them. The obvious they have a smaller group of advising for that. They can really kind of keep touch with them. They can help them make that transition into college. The first year is the artist here for to make that transition, so having that extra help is super important. After the first year, those students transition to the college advisors. That's where I'm at, and then we help.
I'm all the way through cloud rank and it's not that we when we might spend less time with them, but we don't force them beat with us. In other words, it becomes a relationship where the advisor inclusion come together at the time that they need to talk. Hopefully this at least one semester in order to talk about Beverly. What's been happening in your in your life, and then your learning process during that semester. But to think about what comes next in your learning process, we have a couple other types of advising on campus so you can see capital scholars advisors.
They are the students who the advisors who work with our Honors program students and they work with those students for the first half of their degree till they finish the Capital Scholars program and then those students transition on to college advisors as well. The same with athletic advisors. They work with our student athletes for the first two years and then they transition on as well. In both cases with capital scholars, advisors, then athletic advisors, those people still are available to the students that they need to talk to them, of course. And then the last line here, faculty mentor ship.
Is a very important part, so the wonderful thing about faculty members is that they love to talk about what they know. So the beautiful thing is that no matter what your major, if you're a psychology major and you have a chance to talk to Doctor Switzer, I can almost guarantee she's going to want to talk to you about that because it's what she loves to do. So when it comes to faculty, remember, even though they might not be assigned to officially as an advisor, they're very important parts of your your advising team if you will, because they are in the field, they can help you.
Kind of understand what careers might be ahead of you. They can help you understand where your study within your discipline can take you in your life and even talk about graduate programs and such.
I want to say and again, oh, I do have a slide with my email address as well. So while I may not end up being your advisor in the long run, I know all the devices on campus no matter what your program. If you do have questions, please jot down my email address, send me questions. Some of you may be looking to join us in the future. It has absolutely. There's no problem with you contacting me now, even if you're planning to join us in the future, I'll give you an example. I heard from one of my advisee's.
That her friend is going to transfer from my issue next year and I've already got an appointment with that student we haven't met before, but it was important to me that at least I get a chance to talk to her because we can make that transition more productive and less dramatic for her if we plan it now rather than wait until it happens.
Alright, I'll leave it open to questions.
Yes, please feel free to ask some. I'm not sure Ben, if they're able to control their microphone up, but if you can ask it do that. You know something in the chat line.
And we can also answer questions in General Springfield. We can answer other questions other than just about our college.
OK, nobody has a question. We're getting ready to go, so I want one more chance.
Yeah, we could have people typing furiously.
Yes yes, wait for a second.
Mike Elvery

I have a quick question...
Also, if you don't have a question right now, you can definitely, yeah. Do we have any? Yes, OK, we were you.

Talk about internships.
Eduardo, I think we can we can. I think he wants to talk.

Yes, and do you want to say anything?
Welcome back.

You mentioned a program where all coursework can be completed online. Does this include the gen ed requirements? I'm asking because I heard freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus...
I can I I? I agree with Doctor Switzer that you really should be considering them depending upon your major at US, it might actually be requirement of your major. So some degrees actually require internships. My feeling about internships are that even if you come to you IS you get straight A's in every class you go to every class you read, every book you get perfect grades. If you don't do an internship, you enter the workforce at a deficit. So it's really really that important. My feeling is a lot of students are intimidated by internships, 'cause it's basically looking for a job.
And so if you feel that way, that's normal. That's not a bad thing. That's just exactly how it should feel. So just kind of push through that and kind of put get the resources you can. What I do want to say about internships, that's I think a lot of misconception is that friendships should not be. Go get me coffee or answer the phone or something like that. A good internship should really be the organization in trust you to do real work an you follow through with that.
Something you put on your resume rather than just something you do for credit.
Yeah I had a couple more things I know specifically about the psychology internships, hundreds college Department and then office has alot well established in ship sets 220 years in a variety of majors, but what some of our psychology she's done, particularly if they go home over this is to contact an agency that they want to work with. Or it might be an agency that they've been working with and if you do something you been working somewhere and you do something.
Different than what we've been doing. Every internship that's allowed an. So you compose your own internship, especially if you're in the summer and you're going to be at home service where you are and easy to do your Department and the integer office. But we really have psychology students. Do internships where they live in the summer because it's convenient for them. And it's a way that experience and also get credit for it during sometime.
Sure.
And then he mentioned a program where all course work can be completed online. Does this include the gentlemen's? I'm asking because I heard from Artemis don't know this better than I are all the online version measures.
Hey.
Good, it's it's actually really good question. So let me. There's a couple questions there, so freshmen and sophomores are not necessarily required to live on campus. However, we that's what we want. An if you live locally, you can get a waiver so you can stay at home. So we do. We do one show on our campus, but we do offer waivers as well when it comes to general application, the answer is yes, you can do 100% of your general education online. With one caveat, we do not teach dinner. I'm sorry.
Developmental math courses in an online format. So if you were to come into the University ready to take college algebra, ready to take calculus, something like that would be perfectly fine. You can do those online, but if you like many people need, it's not actually a negative thing, but a lot of students actually need a developmental class before they're ready for college math. No shame in that whatsoever, but we don't offer those in an online format, but everything else absolutely can do online.
And Mike, are you thinking about it online?
Mike Elvery
01:31:23 PM
Thank you, I am.
If you want, you can put my email address on the screen, send me an email, tell me what you're thinking and we can go back and forth and kind of work together to figure out exactly how to serve your needs.
You're playing this like Major. I can also talk to you.
Absolutely an I should say definitely email me. I'm going to send you to the best person. It might not be me, but I'll make sure you get to the right person for sure.
Mike Elvery

However, I live in the Chicagoland area, so the commuter option does not seem to apply. I am planning on entering Comp Sci
OK, anybody have a good OK?
Yeah, let me go one other step like so if you are. If you're in the Chicago area, there is one other thing. If you're going to come in as a freshman, we don't actually allow freshmen to apply online programs. We require that you have at least 30 hours, But again, William will work that out. Will figure out what you should take in those 30 hours. You can do those locally, and then you can apply to us as a sophomore and then finish everything else up with us.
Mike Elvery
01:32:35 PM
O, than you
OK, if nobody else has a question then.
We're going to go, but please.
You're very welcome, Mike.
Absolutely.
Email either and they are happy to answer any questions later on at any point. Do you think something next week we're still happy answer questions, so we hope you all have a great day.
Holy will you ask?
The banks.
Thanks all.
