All right. Well, welcome everybody. My name is Rebecca Johnson. I am part of the admissions team here at the University of Illinois Springfield. Before we get into the presentation today, I have a couple of housekeeping items to go over so that you are aware this webinar is being recorded and will be made available for your viewing afterward. So don't feel like you need to take frantic notes within your screen. You will see there is an option for closed captioning at the top bar. It looks like a little CC button.
And then right next to that option is also an option to make your video full screen if you would like to do that as well.
If you need to resync your audio at any point, just refresh your browser and that should clear anything up. A lot of your questions will be addressed in today's presentation, but feel free to ask any questions you would like in the chat and we will go over those at the end of the presentation.
I know there's a lot of people here today which we are excited to see and we're all happy you're here. With that said, I'm gonna like to introduce you to Brian Moore and Barbara Van **** Brown.
And go ahead and take it over. Thank you for being here today.

Hi everyone
Good morning and welcome. I'm happy to talk with you about the Uis graduate opportunities that we have for you. I'm going to begin with talking a little bit about.
Just where we are, we're in the state of Illinois, so you can kind of see Springfields about halfway down between Chicago and Saint Louis if you're looking at that US map.
Matar Samba
11:02:04 AM
Good day everyone
We have a a number of US of graduate degree programs and and then we're going to be talking about our GPS. I as well as Brian's going to be talking about the GA program and we'll have those questions at the end. So where is UIS you can see here a number of the cities here in the great state of Illinois and we're about 200 miles from Chicago and 90 miles from Saint Louis.
Uh, we have a fairly large campus that's outside of Springfield and we have a lot of farm fields around us. So, but we're not too far from Springfield, about 10 minutes.
Mariama Conateh
11:02:26 AM
Hello everyone
So it is a public university and we pride ourselves with small class sizes. We are one of three universities and within the University of Illinois system and our campus was named the number one public regional university in Illinois by the US News and World reports, America's best colleges. So we're very proud of that.
In terms of our degrees, you can see here that we have quite a few of graduate degrees. All of these degrees do have opportunities for placement in our internship programs.
So we have. I think you can look, take a look and see if there's anything there that that fits what you're interested in.

Hi everyone
The Graduate Public Service Internship Program provides paid internships with state agencies throughout state government, and we've recently added on some nonprofits and also some local government positions to that roster. So those are internships that are related to your field of study and basically gives you hands on experience doing what you're.

hi everyone
Wanting to learn about so you can actually apply your degree. In addition to that, it's a great opportunity to network and make connections with people in your field of study. With the GPSI you're working part time in the fall and the spring. So it's 20 hours in the fall in the spring and it's $1200. It's a paid internship, so it's a pretty good deal. And then 2400 in the summer when you're working.
Full-time placements are in both Springfield and Chicago.
Some of the different kinds of GPSI placements we have are internal audit, budget analyst, conservation, environmental toxicity, infectious disease, a lot of what we've been doing, a lot of work with COVID through the Department of Public Health. We have placements also with dot health and Family Services, DCFS, all of those various agencies.
Have needs for interns and of course you know, for business majors, public admin folks, that kind of goes across the board.
That's also true for computer science.
And I would also add, um from the security aspects of computer science as well.
So you are getting this, this is the benefits you're you're going to get a tuition waiver in addition to a paid internship. So the tuition waivers for 24 credits there are. The way we we divide it up is 10 credits in the fall, 10 credits in the spring, and then 4 credits in the summer. However, anytime during that contract year you can transfer those credits around. So if you have like 3-4 credits, 3/4.

Credit classes and you're going to be taking 12 that particular semester. You might want to move 2 credits from the summer to the fall to cover those those additional 2 credits so that you can have all of your credits covered so that there is transferability between just within the contract here, there's also a fee waiver at 6:50 for the fall in the spring semester. So that's a total of 1300. And then as far as your professional Development Fund goes, that's an.

Annual fee $300.00 that you can use to pay for a subscription, for instance to a magazine or if you need to do any, any traveling to a conference or something like that. Those are funds that can be used for that purpose. And then of course, I mentioned earlier the monthly stipend, which is 1200 when you're working part time and 2400 when you're working full time.
And now, I'm going to turn it over to Brian.
Hello everyone, I'm Brian Moore. I'm the program coordinator for the Graduate Assistantship program.
Uh, the the the benefits these programs are are similar with the benefits and also the the workload, except for graduate assistantships are all on campus, so they're.
Matar Samba

11:07:30 AM
How to apply?
There's several categories. These are all GA's. Most of the positions are just classified as a graduate assistant. We do have some positions that are teaching assistants. There's several that are research assistants. Those might be a grant funded program.
And we also have a couple.
Samuel Akporhiunuvwiyo
11:07:49 AM
Please can we have access to the slides and recording.
Pre professional graduate assistants. Those would be limited to counseling students in the human development counseling program.
And I'm not able to move this slide. Thank you.
You said the benefits are similar.
You get a tuition and service fee waiver for 8 to 12 hours each semester in the fall and spring, and then six hours in the summer. So.
Graduate assistance work. Don't work in the summer. Your contract is for spring and fall.
However, we do have offer, there's a few more.
Cpsi program offers 24. We offer 30 within an academic year.
Rebecca Johnson
11:08:38 AM
The recording will be posted on the grad week website within the next week.

Hello every one I am Dr Amanuel Orkaido from Ethiopia,East Africa.
Those monthly stipend again, is very similar for this year's first year assistants get 121781 a month. The second year assistance gets $60.00 more than that.

11:09:02 AM
I will appreciate the recordings for the Management Information Systems session as well. Ighosamuel@gmail.com
Yeah, as I said, summer's off so it's something to consider if you're looking at GSI and GA if you're if you're wanting to take a full load in the summer, which would be like 6 hours.
It might be better off looking for a GA position rather than GPSI. It's also you get to work in an academic setting, interacting with students and faculty.
Salisu Abubakar
11:09:31 AM
Hello, Salisu from Nigeria
And the positions are let me say this. So the the application process is not program specific. So what if you apply for GA?
And you're eligible, you're going to be placed into a hiring pool and then those units that are looking to hire someone can look at, they can hire somebody from any discipline. So for example.
Person in a business program.
Samuel Akporhiunuvwiyo
11:09:52 AM
Thank you Rebecca Johnson
Might work. There might be a need for them. Uh, say the Performing Arts Center or or some of the various.
Other entities across campus, we have academic programs and then we have support units that also hire GA's. Our program is a little smaller than GPSI. We usually have about 60 graduate assistance working at any given time, whereas GPSI has more in the range of 200. So there's fewer positions, but but just as valuable and and we we don't want to just give you an opportunity to work and get a tuition waiver. We want the work to be.
Be valuable to you as you go forward so you can say, yes, I have this real world work experience, and if you're going on in academia, you can. You know you'll have connections with faculty members, perhaps collaborating on a.
On publications, et cetera.

Where do we access the recorded webinars?
I think this is just the application information, and we did have a question about how do you apply. It's actually part of your online application for grad school. So with both of these programs, you need to be admitted to a graduate program, and that's part of the application. So you would be applying for a specific major and then in addition to that.
Sai Ravi Teja Chada
11:11:32 AM
I secured admission through shorelight, can you please let me know how to apply forGPSI?
A 2.5 GPA is required, uh, three letters of recommendation that you would upload as a part of that online application along with your resume. And one of the things that I want to point out about the resume I I have been talking to quite a few people about a a specific piece of your resume that I think is valuable, and that is to put some type of a goal statement or a purpose statement at the top of your resume.
Rebecca Johnson
11:12:03 AM
The webinars will be available on the Grad Week website next week
So that you can let you know our, our supervisors, the agency supervisors, know what, what kind of skills you you want to be able to practice or you want to learn so that it helps them to kind of make the connection between your experience and what positions they have to offer. That's not always easily apparent. So I really encourage you to use, you know, just a a sentence or two.
Matar Samba
11:12:32 AM
I applied the GPSI last semester but was not shortlisted. What is my change of getting it this time
And talk about what it is you're looking for in a placement, it just really helps to direct them a little bit. As far as our deadlines go, they're very similar for spring 2023. So that's for replacement in the spring. It's a N1 deadline for both programs, correct, Brian?
Emmanuel Ogunlade
11:12:42 AM
I've submitted all necessary documents including WES Evaluation and 3 Letter of Recommendation.
Yes. And I just want to say that that deadline, that's for a complete application. So that means that you've got the GA GPSI application, which is there's just one application for both, but you check a box to say, yes, I want to be just GPSI or just GA or you can say you want to be considered for both, but then that it also includes the letters of recommendation.
Your resume and an admissions decision, so you have to be admitted by that November 1st date in order to be considered.
Right. And then for the the fall, so deadline would be may one or March 15th for the G8 program for fall placement. So fall of 2023, one of the questions that I'm seeing over in in the chat is about shorelight and there is a limitation with shorelight shorelight applicants are not allowed to apply for.
Mariama Conateh
11:14:11 AM
If you already applied and didn't get any response back for more than 6 months, does that mean you are unqualified if not can you reapply again?
DA positions, so that won't be an option for you. You still are able to apply for GSI positions as long as they are not on campus. We do have a few GSI positions on campus, so as long as it's not on campus, then you are eligible to apply for GPSI. Now the question is how do you do that? You will need to contact admissions. Let them know.
That your shower light applicant and they will need to send you the GSI application. It's not part of your shorelight admission application and so that's why it has to be done separately as a separate step. It should happen automatically within two or three days after you complete your shorelight application, but if it doesn't, or if you haven't received it and you want to to get that application, then you can reach out to USA.
Salisu Abubakar
11:14:45 AM
Is the GRE waived for fall applications?
Permissions and they can send you a link for that for that application.
Sai Ravi Teja Chada
11:15:06 AM
Thank you very much for answering my query
And I would also add that you can apply for both GA and GPSI, but if you accept an offer from one program or the other then then you'll be taken out of consideration for the other than the other hiring pool. So if you if you accept.
If you accepted GA position, then you won't be removed from the GPSI hiring pool and vice versa.
Rebecca Johnson
11:15:16 AM
Salisu: The MBA program does require the GRE or GMAT in some situations. But that is all
Cynthia Onwuasoeze
11:15:35 AM
Hi Everyone,
I also see somebody asked about how do we know if our application has been reviewed. We're working on a system so we can notify everyone at the end of the hiring period whether or not you you received an offer or not that yes, we have your application and we keep applications active for up to one year, so.
If you don't say you apply for spring but you don't get an offer, your application will still be valid for fall consideration and you could call anytime to check on your applicant or e-mail us to check on the app the status of your application.
Cynthia Onwuasoeze

I seen on the GA/GPSI website about not considering student applications who havent received an F1 visa. Please what does it mean
Yes, there is a question too about if there if you haven't had a response back for more than six months. Well, part of the situation right now is that we would have been dealing with fall intakes in the spring. So if you applied in the spring for next spring, then it could be more than six months that we haven't reviewed your application yet for, for GPS I we're going to be reviewing.
Applications starting in October, so starting next week we'll be reviewing applications and preparing the pool for the spring of 2023.
OK. And then is the way the process works is that it's actually a matching, so the agencies will, you know, put forth their positions, will get their position descriptions by N1 and we'll have your applications by N1. And so then the process is for them to look at all of the applications that we've received that are pertinent to their position and then you also will get an opportunity.

Salisu Abubakar

Is the English proficiency scores alsowaived for candidates that english was the language of their instruction during the bachelor's degree?
To look at the positions and to determine which ones you're interested in interviewing for. So it's it's a, it's a match between the two of you, and you can interview up to 9 agencies.
Rebecca Johnson
11:17:41 AM
Salisu - it depends on the country. Please email admissions at admissions@uis.edu
Sama Jawneh
11:17:54 AM
My question is would there be any interview for these positions? If yes , how about those that are not in the US at the time of interview, will they be accorded online interview?
On the GA GPSI website, um about not considering student applications who haven't received an F1 visa right now. We have been for the last two sessions we have allowed you to apply without your visa, so you do not have to have received your F1 visa to apply, however.
Jervis Ohikhuare
11:18:03 AM
Please also can i get recording of this session
Um, it can be a problem and you need to be aware of this, that at the point in time that you are selected for the position, then you're kind of in a bind to get that F1 visa and be able to start on time. If you're not able to start on time, then you know you will, you know not you know you'll lose the position.
Emike Aigbodioh
11:18:33 AM
Can you explain how GPSI is different from GA.
Yeah, it's and the F1 visa is not a requirement to to interview and accept a position for GA we will allow you to interview and accept the position, but likewise if you're not able to secure the visa you may end up losing the position. And I also see a question about interviews for international students. For GA at least we do remote interviews so you don't have to be on site to interview. Most of them have been since COVID.
Rebecca Johnson
11:18:58 AM
Emike - GPSI positions are mostly off campus in Springfield; GA positions are on campus.
It's pretty much been the the rule rather than the exception.
Right, right. And I think we've found that it works very well to do them that way for the agencies as well As for the students, for the applicants. And so I think that that's going to be a permanent change that will continue to have those interviews.
Electronic virtual interviews using zoom.
Rebecca Johnson
11:19:47 AM
Emike - the recording will also be available early next week
How GSI is different from GA is basically, I think we talked about it, but, but just to simply say, they're both placements, one with the state agency, one on campus. So if you have an issue with not having an ability to travel, you don't have a car, those kinds of things, campus is going to be a better fit for you.
If you want to work for a state agency, then you know GSI is the way that you want to go. If you want to work more in an academic setting, GA is the way that you want to go. Pay is about the same.
Um, within you know a little bit and then in addition to that you do have the tuition waivers a little bit different. So you've got basically 24 with GSI and you have 30.
And then there's also the issue of summer. So GPSI interns work full time in the summer, whereas gas don't don't work at all in the summer.
Tofunmi Ajayi
11:20:52 AM
What are the requirements for tuition waivers?
Charles Chukwudi
11:21:04 AM
Can you defer your GA/GPSI position to a latter time, let’s say you apply for Spring 2023 resumption, and there’s a delay in getting your F1 visa, and you defer to fall 2023, do you have to reapply if you defer to fall 2023? Or will the position be kept for you till you resume by fall 2023?

Rebecca Johnson
11:21:54 AM
Charles - if you are offered a position and can't enroll, you do lose the position. But you can be reconsidered for another term
Rebecca Johnson
11:22:16 AM
Ensa -the same recommendations can be used for both admissions and GA/GPSI
I I see a question here about deferring your GPA or GSI position to a later time. So for GA and I think this probably holds true for GSI too if if you're if you accept the position and then you are not able to come.
Sama Jawneh
11:22:26 AM
Besides as a lecturer in home country , if one applied both and preferred working as a GA or RA etc. Will you be given the opportunity to choose or the school will decide?
We can't, we can't, we can't hold that position open for you. In rare instances it may be possible, but as a general rule, no, we're not going to be able to hold the position open. You can certainly remain in the hiring pool and go through the interview process again, but but we're not able to just hold that position open because these, these units are these agencies, they're they need these people in place.
I see a question here about preferred or the choices between GA or RA et cetera. So.
Emike Aigbodioh
11:23:59 AM
Does these GA and GPSI cover full or half or three quarter funding to students ?
Ensa A Saho
11:24:12 AM
Thanks robecca
I mean, if you get more than one offer, you certainly have the opportunity to choose. But the way it works is that the applicants in the GA pool are separated by by discipline, so the accountancy or business or environmental science, etcetera. And if I'm have a job that I'm looking to hire someone, I might, I might accept somebody from a business background or computer science or perhaps public administrations. So I'm going to look through those applications and choose the applicants.

That I want to interview, but you you don't really have a choice in the matter. You apply for GA and then you may get offers from from various departments. But.
You don't contact them, they'll they'll select you and and.
And offer you an interview.
Archita Hitendrakumar Patel
11:25:18 AM
Can you please explain again about how to apply?
Rebecca Johnson
11:25:33 AM
Archita - you apply after submitting your application to UIS.
Well, we covered again, it's it's a little confusing because there's tuition and then there's fees. So we cover all the tuition up to up to 12 hours a semester and the service fees up to 8 hours versus of the service fees. So the fees are charged again by credit hour depending on how many credit hours you're enrolled for. That's how much of fees you're gonna have to pay. I I would say as a general rule.
Archita Hitendrakumar Patel
11:25:52 AM
I already applied
If you get if you're enrolled as a GA and you get a tuition waiver, you're still going to end up with probably 700 to $1000 of out of pocket expenses each semester. We don't cover housing, we don't cover books, but you do get that monthly stipend of $1200 in addition to the tuition waiver.

I did see one, and Rebecca responded about the letters of recommendation. If you're if your academic program requires letters of recommendation, then those will automatically be linked to your GA GPSI application. You can use the same letters for both. You don't have to have separate letters written, however, if your academic program.
Doesn't require. Then you will have to have recommenders submit those letters on your behalf.
