Computer Science & Data Analytics
Do you hear me?
OK.
Hi, Connie.
Hello.
This better not coming in yet.
Ohh, spread here.
Rebecca Johnson
02:00:19 PM
Welcome everyone!
Alright, well welcome everybody.
Hello everyone.
Are you able to advance your slides, Doctor Wynn?
Oh, I thought the sweat will start first.
Computer science.
I'm not sure if he's having technical difficulties or not.
Courtney, you can, can you go ahead?
Courtney yeah.
Sure, I am having trouble advancing the slides.
Oh.
I can advance it for you.
OK.
Oh.
Oh yeah.
Is it you or me?
OK.
It's me, so thank you everyone for tuning in to our session on the Masters degree programs and computer science and data analytics. Computer science is one of the most revolutionary science and engineering fields for the last 40 years.
And computer science.
Let's.
Ohh.
There's doctor branoff.
Can you hear me?
Yeah, perfect.
Perfect. OK, finally I was able to connect. Sorry about this.
So as you can see on the slide, computer science is one of the most revolutionary science or engineering field of the last 40 years. In the next probably next 50 years.
And computer scientists are distinguished by the high level of theoretical expertise and innovation.
Which they applied to complex problems and the creation of applications of new technology.
And the computer science graduate degree program here at UW provides a strong foundation in computer science, and students have access to outstanding variety of computing systems.
The Masters degree program is oriented towards software and information system security, and it is most appropriate for students interested in the design, analysis, implementation of software and security.
OK, so how do Courtney, can you please help me with the slides?
OK.
Then there is a an icon on the top right. There's sliding up and down.
Perfect. Now what career paths you can expect? I mean only the sky is limit. You can become a system analyst, programmer, database administrator, software engineering, systems engineering, network engineering Engineer, Information Assurance and system security analyst. Basically, computer systems are in every area of our life.
And there are no limits to what you can do. You can work in banking, you can work in finance, you can work in aerospace, you can work in the military, you can use for government, you can you work for the government. So this is one of the fields which offers almost unlimited career opportunities.
And what is interesting about our program and our department in general is that our department has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education. And this is very prestigious designation bestowed by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
And they joined the sponsor this national centers of Academic Excellence in cyber Defense Education program.
And the goal of this program is to reduce vulnerability in our national information infrastructure by promoting higher education and research in information assurance and producing a growing number of professionals with information assurance expertise in various disciplines. And students attending this designated schools, including QS, are eligible to apply for scholarships and grants through the Department of Defense Information Assurance Scholarship Program.
And the Federal Cyber Service Scholarship for service program.
And official letters for this red designation have been sent to the university president, the state government, members of the Congress and appropriate congressional committee. So this is very prestigious and very beneficial designations.
For example, if you're going to apply for a job in information system security in any cybersecurity field, many employers require that you have some experience. And if you come from such a center like ours, in many cases this requirement is dropped its way for you. Basically, this is the analogue for accreditation in the area of cyber defense education.
And to get this, uh, designation, we have to we had to pass very rigorous examination of our programs by experts of National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security, which actually affirms that our program.
Follows the governmental standards in cyber defense education.
So when you talk about our program, we have online options on campus or option. You need to take 32 K 8 hours for example in computer science and if I'm in computer science and out of these 32 credit hours.
Four credit hours are for the Capstone, a graduate research seminar. The other 224 hours, which are seven courses, are electives, and this is unique opportunity which only a few programs in this country have. Because you can design your graduate program, you can tailor it to your specific interests, career goals, and background, and we offer such a flexibility.
In order to be able to stay abreast of all new developments in the field, so we change our courses very frequently, very rapidly to offer you innovative.
Yeah, cutting edge content.
Let me see what we have on the next slide.
Program requirements. As I told you, 32 credit hours. One of this is for the CC 540 graduate Research Seminar, which is 4 creditors and the remaining 28 are for the.
Electives.
The prerequisites for the program is that you need to have a bachelor's degree in computer science, or if you don't have a bachelor degree, you can get conditional admission with a series of prerequisite courses.
And I believe this is everything for the computer science program.
You know Doctor Tanguin will talk about the data analytics program.
OK. Thanks brother. Right now.
Still.

Does the Computer Science program require an internship to graduate?
Svet Braynov
02:11:11 PM
Internship is not required but it is available in the summer.
Damir Temir
02:11:30 PM
And how does it compare to MCS UIUC? Is there a different in coursework and are credits transferrable between each other?
Svet Braynov
02:12:40 PM
Different programs have different coursework. Each program imposes a limit on the number of the courses that can be transferred.
Svet Braynov
02:13:30 PM
For example, we allow students to transfer in 2 graduate courses. Am not sure how many courses UIUC allows to transfer in.

How is MS in Computer science different from MS in MIS
Archita Hitendrakumar Patel
02:14:17 PM
Creadit transfer are allowed?
Svet Braynov
02:15:15 PM
MIS ia about management of computer systems. CS is about the computer systems themselves. MIS does not cover software or hardware.
Svet Braynov
02:15:29 PM
Credit transfers are allowed.

02:15:37 PM
Are there any CS Department TA/GA opportunities for Master's students?
Samuel Akporhiunuvwiyo

Thank you

At the graduate level, there are a few resources of financial aid for students. However, UIS cannot guarantee any funding for education. For graduate students, the university offers Graduate Assistantship and Graduate Internship opportunities that have a separate application process after a student has been admitted to UIS and their department. Like a job, these positions require an application and an interview. You will compete with other applicants for the available positions.
All right. Thank you very much, Doctor Wynn and Doctor Branoff. If any students have any questions, feel free to drop them into the slide. Otherwise, I'd like to invite you to participate in the other presentations we are having this week for grad week. If you are an international student, we also have an international admissions presentation next Thursday at 6:00 AM, Central time that I hope you can join us for and if you are a student.

If I'd to pursue a career in Data Science, is CS or Data Analytics a more suitable program?
Within the United States, we will have an admission session the following Wednesday night that you can also join to learn more about the admissions process.

Do you (Data Analytics) have funding opportunities i.e. scholarships, GA and TAs for Spring 2023
I don't see any questions coming into the chat. Um, so if any students, uh, you're welcome to reach out to the departments directly. Or you can reach out to usandadmissions@uis.edu and I will put that in the chat.
If you have any additional questions that come up.
Alright, I don't see anything joining us today. So again, thank you Doctor Wynn and Doctor Branoff and Courtney for joining us and we look forward to seeing if we get all of your applications coming through very soon.

Hi, When will the GPSI interviews taking place for spring semester students. Thanks
Tung Nguyen
02:18:26 PM
I think DAT is more speciffically to data processing.
Courtney Singleton
02:19:15 PM
That would be a good question for our GPSI Office: gpsimail@uis.edu.

02:19:21 PM
We have intership positions. You can apply.
